Bike Share is a service in which bicycles are made available for shared use to individuals on a very short term basis. Bike-share began in Europe in 1965 and a viable format emerged in the mid-2000s thanks to the introduction of information technology.
A row of bikeshare bikes in front of the artisanal donut shop. It doesn't get much more menacing really.

I took part in the DC Street Photography Collective's photowalk this afternoon in Dupont Circle. Unfortunately I had to cut out early due to the heat, but I still had a great time and met some wonderful photographers!

This new bicycle-sharing scheme started in Helsinki today - my bike is not for share, though. Initially, there are 500 bicycles and 50 docking stations. The target for next year is 1500 bicycles, 150 docking stations, and a wider geographical reach. The instructions on this side of the pole are in English and Swedish, the same can be found in Finnish on the other side. The number of bikes at any particular moment at each docking station can be checked at dev.hsl.fi/kaupunkipyorat/ (beta version).
The bikeshare program is not going to restart before April 1 but many docking stations are up already.
