The wetlands, wildlife area and rice farms are all flooded to ease the pressure on the rivers after a series of Pineapple Express (or atmospheric river) storms. The little black ducks (not visible in this picture, but all throughout the Bypass) and other waterfowl are very happy. The wading birds (egrets, mainly) have moved to newly flooded fields while the water is deep.

Urban mobility in motion—this dynamic image captures a rider cruising through the city on a red JUMP electric bike. With the blurred backdrop of a brick building and the rider’s casual style, the scene embodies the energy and freedom of modern city cycling. It’s a snapshot of sustainable transportation meeting street-smart style.
Not sure on the ID, but I'm leaning toward juvenile, probably a red-tailed or Swainson's hawk. Even with a tail that isn't terribly red, more toward red-tailed with the heavy beak, and lack of a white "beard." But maybe a dark morph... It does not appear to be doing the "hunch" of a red-shouldered hawk.
Suggestions and actual knowledge are welcome.
Spotted on my ride home over the Yolo Causeway.
I took a slightly different route home on Friday, and as I was going alongside a fence, it looked (at a glance) like the barbs were about 1.5" (4cm) long. Closer inspection revealed that dragonflies were perched on almost every barb. I wish I could have captured the overall look of it.
A co-worker of mine, Jen, built this bike at the Bamboo Bike Studio (bamboobikestudio.useful-arts.com/) in San Francisco. This bicycle has a solid bamboo frame. It is not a bamboo-covered novelty bike. Users of the studio work with one of its craftsmen to build their own bikes, which seems like a great learning experience. This seems like the ultimate in green transportation. Bamboo is very much a renewable resource, and is strong and resilient. Bikes are available in single speed and multi-speed "kits."
I think this is a great idea that deserves to be show-cased.
