I'ts Muon g-2 and it measures the behavior of muons in a magnetic field. Very Exciting! What Exactly is that? I don't know...
But anyway, The experiment isn't actually new, it was built at Brookhaven in the late 90's and had a short run which started hinting to new physics... Then it was cancelled. Without the Tevatron, Fermilab had some spare beam available and has agreed to host the experiment. Most of it was able to be broken down to pieces that are easy to ship, but at the heart of the experiment are 3 large circular superconducting electromagnets. These are single coil magnets 50' wide which would be impossible to disassemble and extremely expensive to build replacements. To get them to Fermilab, they have been shipped on a barge from New York to Illinois and now are undergoing a 30 mile journey on surface streets to the lab.
All of these photos are from the Lemont Road portion of the move. There will be 2 more main days of moving it on the roads, One in which they will temporarily close part if I-355 and one in which they will close I-88.
To find out lots more info, check out the official site of the move at muon-g-2.fnal.gov/bigmove/
