Bull Moose, Brainard Lake, Ward, CO
This was the most spectacular moose sighting I've experienced and I was extremely excited that I had my camera ready to capture this special moment. Almost every time I visit Brainard Lake in the mornings, I've spotted moose in this spot right near the Lake. After witnessing the incredible display of light captured in my previous post, I made it back to the trailhead. Knowing that I had an opportunity to see some moose on my way out, I unpacked my camera and attached my long lens to have riding shotgun with me. Sure enough, I came around the bend and saw a few people standing alongside the road and then saw 4 moose grazing in the willows. I stopped and watched them for a good 15-20 minutes. The sun had climbed up into the clouds after sunrise too and produced this perfect lighting to shoot these guys in. Once I captured this moment, I knew I had a winner to go home with. I was ecstatic, not only the best light I've seen all summer at sunrise, but a beautiful sighting of some moose to go with it. As I moved on from this spot a few hundred feet down the road, I ran into another gathering of people watching 4 more bull moose in the willows. I couldn't believe I saw 8 moose. It was a morning to remember. I messed around with a few different crops, but ultimately, this 16x9 crop worked the best. I love the feeling of the young bull staring to the much older bull. It's great to see them thriving in Colorado.

I took this over the summer but couldn't release it until after I gave his Mother a copy for xmas. I matted it with birch-bark from the campsite, and dry pressed the red leaf he has, which was also under the glass in the frame. It cam eout nice!

Originally the Mohawk and Malone Railroad, the line connected the city of Herkimer with Lake Placid, NY. In 1913, The New York Central took over the branch. I haven't been here in ages, but was planning a trip last fall between Utica & Big Moose on The Adirondack Scenic Railroad. The line was used for the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, and sat idle until 1992, when the Adirondack Scenic was formed. I remember that trains would run a few miles down the track, then run in reverse back to Thendera Station. A lot has changed since then. In recent years, there has been an ongoing conflict between railroad enthusiasts and * to turn a 30 mile stretch of track between Big Moose, and Tupper Lake into a recreational trail, and have the rails lifted. Ultimately the governor ruled in favor of the multi-recreational trail, agreeing to give funds to improve track on the sections still in use today. I'm not sure what the current situation is, however I think the railroad is fighting the forced abandonment. Perhaps appealing the decision, and buying time? I've been told that the line is protected on The National Registry of Historic Places. The whole thing makes me so angry, that I haven't kept up with it. The Adirondack Scenic also has excursions from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake. The line between Herkimer and Remsen was abandoned in piecemeal. Trains now operate over what was originally, The Black River & Utica Railroad, predecessor to the Utica & Black River, Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg, New York Central & Hudson River, Penn Central, Conrail, and now The Mohawk & Adirondack railroad between Utica and Remsen, where a replica depot has been built. Looking forward to doing Utica to Big Moose later in the year!
The station still stands, and is used by the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. The hamlet was once called Fulton Chain. It was at one time the junction of the Fulton Chain Railway, and the Mohawk & Malone Railway, which was later acquired by the New York Central. This postcard was mailed on August 10, 1915.
Around 1989 my lovely wife (pictured) and I were out canoe camping in the Adirondacks, on the Stillwater Reservoir. Cold and wet the whole week, frost in August, the whole thing. Paddling just to stay warm. We found a causeway where the tracks crossed, but it was clear they weren't used anymore, so we set up lunch on the only high spot around -- middle of the tracks. After this was taken, we hiked down the tracks in this area of wilderness where there are no roads, and found a strange building in a clearing. On closer inspection, it was some kind of general store and restaurant, and there were a number of camps nearby. The folks who had those camps used hand-cars and jeeps adapted for rail to get in, using the same tracks we had lunched on. We walked into the restaurant (the legendary Norridgewock), and were stunned to find about 60 old people, all seated in this restaurant in the middle of true wilderness, waiting for Monday's Blue Hair Special.

The Thursday Adirondack Scenic Railroad train from Utica is stopped at Big Moose and I'm at the north end to conduct the Class 3 brake test. Fall foliage is near peak in this part of the Adirondacks.

After I ran SW-1 NYC 705 from Thendara to Big Moose on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad we picked up a display tank car and two ballast hoppers moving them from the main track onto the runaround track at Big Moose in preparation for a later night photo session during Railfan Weekend. Big Moose Station restaurant is right behind me.

While we were in the Adirondack Mountains, in upstate New York, there was a bazaar at a church called Big Moose Community Chapel. The church is open only during summertime and at Christmas. We found the people to be energetic, and the building beautiful. This cross is above the front door.
