On a safari in Kenya we saw many elephants. These are telling us to back-off; you can notice by their ears. Many thanks to our driver Martin!

Why do cats climb trees? Well, different cats probably climb for different reasons. This young lion cub is climbing with brothers, sisters, and cousins predominantly for fun. Lions don't generally climb trees and when they do so it seems to be for pleasure. Leopards, on the other hand, spend much of their time in trees. They even store their food high up in trees. It is much more rare to see an adult lion in a tree, and most males are just too big to do so. So why do our domestic cats climb trees? Because they can??

These young Lion cubs (Panthera leo) emerged from their hiding place just before sunset, there were 5 cubs in total. The standing cat clearly established its leadership qualities. Their massive Dad was relaxing under a tree, across the ravine from their hiding place, ready to pounce on anything that messed with his kids. Masai Mara, Kenya.

Vultures fly away in a panic as a lion returns to the carcass that was left just minutes ago by other members of the pride. An entire eland can virtually disappear within an hour or so, with animals lining up in succession to feast on the remains. The apex predators do their best to keep the carcass for themselves for as long as they can but eventually they relinquish. First, hyenas close in and devour remains. Shortly after that the vultures and jackals have their turn. Yesterday I explained you how we were looking for the leopard in the treetops. And where did we find him? Under a bush! How unlikely was that? Anyway we got him! He was laying under some brunches only a few meters next to the road and quite a few vehicles went by without noticing him. So we were very lucky that our guide Claudia spotted him!
It’s an absolutely awesome experience when you see your first big wild cat. You sit in an open vehicle with no glas between you and him. It’s a little scary at first but it’s so amazing that you totally forget all your worries. And when he looks straight at you it’s such an intense feeling… I know it’s hard to understand if you haven’t experienced it yourself. Before we went on the safari we have been visiting the Tierpark in Berlin which is a beautiful zoo. But it was so different…
Anyway our supermodel here was waiting until we all got our shot. After maybe 10 minutes he went of. But this wasn’t the end of the story. It was just the beginning!
