I've been so busy thinking about open education I missed how the Toronto waterfront was auctioned off in a private-public partnership to create a SMART city. As Evgeny Morozov says, SMART should be an acronym for Surveillance Marketed As Revolutionary Technology. It really means pervasive, constant surveillance, collecting all the data without any agreements of HOW the data will be used or discussion of WHO owns the data, the intellectual property, the copyright. Information is valuable and tech companies without regulation are collecting as much information as possible, with the hopes that data will be useful later. Natasha says RAW data is an oxymoron and saying things like, "DATA is the NEW OIL" removes an important consideration: THE PEOPLE. This data would not exist without the citizens, what is the responsibility of government to ensure that we don't become data cows, all movements and behaviours measured as a commodity to be monetized in some way without any consent on our parts. While we seemingly give up this consent with our cell phones, once this technology shifts to all the time, everywhere in our environment, there can be no opting out. Ostensibly designed for the tourist and white collar worker, who gets left out. This technology is already being used to keep "unwanted populations" away, making our most marginalized even more precarious. The only small ray of hope is that no decisions have officially been made in Toronto. The Waterfront Toronto organization expertise is creating public-partnernships. They have no data governance experts/ intellectual property lawyers...and they should. Read more from Natasha here: theconversation.com/quayside-toronto-project-proves-that-...

EFI Planted Forests Facility Summer School, Palencia’18
Organised by iuFOR and EFI's Planted Forest Facility (formerly EFIATLANTIC)
Palencia (España)
Hosted by iuFOR ( Universidad de Valladolid & INIA) and Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenierías Agrarias, Universidad de Valladolid
Target public:
Graduate students (Masters and PhD) in forest sciences, forest geomatics or data science
Practitioners and IT staff from forest companies, administrations and R&D institutes
Target outcomes:
By the end of the course the participants will have a comprehensive overview of forest data management and analysis including relevant R skills to develop forest models at stand and tree levels and a foundation on cloud simulation of forest systems.
Rationale:
Forest management is facing different challenges due to the magnitude of the current environmental problems (climate change, invasive species, biodiversity crisis, etc.) and the growing demand for goods and services by the society.
Furthermore, the current Knowledge Society paradigm requires professionals to integrate different skills into their specific domain effectively; for example, the management of big databases, including analysis, modeling and decision making.
Although there are some local initiatives such as the DataForest MSc programme at University of Valladolid this specific type of education and training in data management and analysis is not available to forest managers and forest scientists. In general personnel involved in forest management and its environs have a good working knowledge of forest management systems and methods.
However this knowledge could be further enhanced by skills in other complimentary fields, such as database management, computer programming, data analysis, decision making through operational research techniques, geographic information systems and remote sensing.

The phenomenon known as "big data" is revolutionizing the way businesses, governments and citizens collect and use information. Join the Illinois Humanities Council for a conversation with Christian Rudder, OKCupid co-founder and author of the best-selling Dataclysm, as we discuss how this information explosion influences the way we understand our culture.
In the first installment of IHC's new program series, "Data, Democracy and the Human Story," Jillana Enteen, author and Senior Lecturer in Gender and Sexuality Studies at Northwestern University, will talk with Rudder on his groundbreaking work in data analytics. They will discuss how data might shed new light on some of our society's most enduring questions. What does it mean to approach "human" topics, like romantic attraction or racial bias, through numbers? What can data science and the humanities learn from each other?

With greater access of information, how will we know what's important, relevant, or meaningful? Competition among companies to help us "mine" out the pieces of golden information will increase as big data grows.
