Not far from Sossusvlei is the equally impressive Dead Vlei, a clay pan enclosed by sand dunes that has long been isolated from the waters of the Tsauchab. On the northern edge of the Vlei you can find a large number of dead camel thorn trees that have been preserved in the extreme aridity of the desert for several hundred years and kept from decomposing. The dune in the background is "Big Daddy", the tallest sand dune in the world.

Deadvlei, which means 'dead swamp' in English and Afrikaans, is a flat salt pan covered entirely in white clay that was flooded over 900 years ago, allowing desert acacia trees to grow there for several years. But then red sand dunes surrounded the area, preventing the water from returning. The acacia trees died, sunburned and totally calcified.
In the background, the 325 m high "Big Daddy".
Big Daddy, Sossusvlei, Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia
This photograph was taken in January 2016 and features my brother, Tom, at an apparent crossroads in his successful attempt to reach the summit of the infamous 'Big Daddy' dune in the Sossusvlei region of the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. Big Daddy is the highest dune in the region, at around 325m, and the early morning slog to its summit is on many hardy visitors' itinerary. The crossroads is, of course, illusory; he must go down to go up.
Walking on the Big Daddy Dune in Namib Desert
This is supposed to be one of the highest dune in the world with around 390mt
Endemic giant tortoises became extinct on Mauritius in the early 18th century. However, the establishment of a protected native habitat (the nearby island of Ile Aux Aigrettes) provided an opportunity to introduce the Aldabra giant tortoise (aldabrachelys gigantea gigantea). These animals, imported from Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, have since thrived. This is "big daddy", the largest animal on the island.
At 325m above the Deadvlei pan the scale of the giant sand dune named Big Daddy is something amazing to behold.

• The Dead Vlei has long been separated from Tsauchab's waters by a large sand dune. As a result, a large number of hundreds of years of dead camel thorn trees preserved in the extreme aridity of the desert are being discouraged from decaying.
• The white clay pan is the stage of petrified acacia trees being up to 500 years old.
Day 246 saw us leave Sossuvlei, but before leaving a few us took a flight over the dunes and coast. This is Big Daddy viewed from 5,500 feet. It really gives you a sense of scale, as it's the tallest dune in the world at 1,254 feet or 380 metres

Big Daddy is the tallest dune in the Sossusvlei area. This magnificent dune is situated between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and at 325 meters it dwarfs the other dunes. Should you want the ultimate bragging rights, take a lot of water and trek to the top of Big Daddy where you can look down onto Deadvlei.

The hard way to climb a sand dune: going directly up the side. This way you will sink almost to your knees in the talcum-powder-like sand. It is much easier to walk along the ridge line of the dunes.
This is the "Big Daddy" dune in Namibia, one of the largest in the world.
