From magnificent Big Bend National Park. Mexico-left, USA-right. Rio Grande River and the international border right down the middle.
The canyon walls are made up of massive Santa Elena limestone, early Cretaceous in age (Albian), ~100 million years old.
A reprocessed version of an older image with modern software. Original image taken with 590nm IR-converted camera, image converted to black and white. Shot taken from old Maverick road, at sunrise.
One of the iconic views in the national park, the Sierra del Carmens are best viewed at sunset, when the low sun illuminates the limestone cliffs like neon lights. The cliff/slope morphology is classic geology. The rocks themselves are from the Lower Cretaceous Fredericksburg group (about 120 million years old). In visible light these cliffs are bright pink and peach, which makes for a stunning color picture. Here, I've captured them in IR black and white, which I think really brings out the fabric of the cliffs. One of my favorite places in Big Bend.
From Big Bend national park, just west of Panther Junction and the Chisos mountain complex. Nugent mountain is a lone volcanic edifice that stands about 1,600 feet high. The mountain is made up of a massive igneous core with incredible vertical jointing along a sheer cliff face. It is quite beautiful. It is best seen in low light, preferably in the morning. Here I captured it with my little IR camera and converted it to black and white.

Pano of 36 pictures taken last week at Big Bend NP in Texas.
I still need to work on post-processing star images a little better.
This is the Rio Grande river running thru the canyon in Big Bend National Park Texas.
On a side note, it always amazes me what can be done with a single raw file from a FF camera. This place was very high DR.
One of the most beautiful things you can see in Big Bend is the Sierra del Carmen mountains at sunset. Here, captured with an IR camera, converted to black and white.
Big Bend National Park, Texas.
Taken from Croton Springs with the Chiso Mountain range lit only by a new moon. During the 250 shots, the brush and foreground were light-paint-illuminated by an LED flashlight.

Las Burras loop is a high-clearance, 4WD only trail, that runs off of River road, not too far from Three Dyke hill in Big Bend Ranch state park, Texas. It is rarely traveled and the road reflects that.
As you get up to the end of the loop the welded volcanic tuffs on the cliffs become magical. In the late afternoon, the cliffs and the prickly pear light up and put on a show!
