Just another frame of this final surprise of last summer's trip.
Having bid goodbye to John down in Springfield Frank and I had one last night just us and a half a day left before departing home to opposite sides of the continent. Our last morning dawned clear and dry and as it would turn out the railfan gods had one final surprise in store for us. After a fun morning enjoying Santa Fe Junction for the last time and with only 90 minutes left on the clock we headed toward the West Bottoms. I still wanted a really nice morning lit shot along the UP and when we drove by I was astonished to see a standard cab leader on the point of an eastbound holding west of Hickory Street (CPK001) beside State Line Yard on Main 3 strung out across the Kansas River on the old Missouri Pacific bridge.
In short order the Knoche Yard bound transfer behind UP 1566 (EMD SD40-2 blt. Nov. 1976 as CNW 6928) and 1958 (EMD GP60 blt. Sep. 1989 as SSW 9656) got the light and they were underway across town on Union Pacific's KC Metro Sub .

The Convoy :
Once a year , a local radio station hires a field near the back fo my house and rounds up trucking companies who wnat to donate. $25 is entry. They meet at a 45 min drive from here at a coal mine which feeds the steelworks , along with some motorbikes that are in the Convoy. It costs the mine over $500 000 to shut the mine for a morning for the Convoy.
They make the , normally, 45 min drive , through the tourist roads, horns and lights blazing and people completely line the streets for this event.
Trucking companies bid to be the first truck , and this year , it was the company i did my work experience with, Illawarra Truck Repairs and Spares, and their bid was $66 000 , and last year the winner was $70 000
Why:
For a charity called Camp Quality. All proceeds go to them, who use the money to take ill kids on camps and such.
What :
This year, 900+ Trucks and 700 Motorbikes
The event makes you proud to be a local ! and It is impossible NOT to smile when watching on side of the road.
I have been involved in 4 convoys in its 6 year history , in dad's truck , however last couple of years he has had no luck.
ALSO : I did 3 weeks work experience here as a Diesel Mechanic a year or two ago
The twilight of the day and of the season. Hibernation is near. Time to gather the color and tuck it away. Just remember where you put it so you can nourish your soul come mid February.
Wish you wonderful spring time!
This is my last picture for the next 5 weeks.
I will be back mid April.
Please don't give comments meanwhile!
Thank you all!

First day of the new year I decided to spend the afternoon wandering along some cliffs I have never been to. I readied the camera as the sun was setting. It was not the most spectacular of sunsets and some disappointment crept in. I was making my way back but then as the sun faded below the horizon an explosion of colours occured. What seemed like a dank sullen sky turned into a canvas worthy of any artist. Head over heels I ran back to get some of the tinges on film.
And today I realised that just like in life, even amidst the dreary and dull, extraordinary things can await just round the corner.
Anyways, Happy New Year! Whatever that means.
Tomorrow my daughter Mara moves to Massachusetts. I will miss not having her close.
I wish I could return to the time when the four of us all lived under the same roof.
