LCC's Screen School presents Beyond 2001: New Horizons, an exhibition that explores how activating the archive can creatively enable the development of new work and inform ideas.

Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Stanley Kubrick Archive at the University’s Archives and Special Collections Centre, students produced and show work alongside invited artists and academics that offer new perspectives inspired by archive material from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

A cross-school collaboration celebrating all things screen, the exhibition was set in motion with accompanying performances, events, panels and workshops, punctuated by screenings for staff and students.

The remains of a two stroke engine on the beach.

You can tell it is a two stroke because of the shape of the crank.

For nearly two hundred years the piano’s design has been exactly the same: 12 keys/7 times, low-to-high/left-to-right. Period. But why 12...? Why left-to-right...? What if......

Beyond Twelve is a project that uses state-of-the-art physical modeling technology to break free from the constraints of this design—and the piano will never be the same again.

Concert pianist and MicroFest assistant director Aron Kallay commissioned new works from eight of America’s most imaginative composers, with two ground rules: 1) Re-tune the keyboard, from extended just intonation to 88 equal-divisions of the octave and everything in between. 2) Re-map the keyboard, left can be right, high can be low; pitches need not be linear.

Featuring Kepler's diagram at this point is a reminder that nestings of concentric polyhedra is not a new idea. The concentric hierarchy may be placed in the same lineage as Kepler's "maze" or nesting concept.

The sun sets beyond a local bridge in El Arish, Sinai. I love sunrise and sunset photos, and couldn't resist shooting this one. In the foreground is a little portion of desert sand.

DJ 7L and Beyonder came down from Boston to rock The Rub in Brooklyn this past weekend and picked up our Midi Fighters in ProAudioStar colorways while they were down here.

Two days ago, I was chatting to a dogwalker about butterflies, and she told me she had seen dozens, nay hundreds, on the path from Windy Ridge to Kingsdown.

So, in the afternoon I set off over the fields and past Fleet House, down past the farm and up to the top of Windy Ridge.

There, there are four or five choices of direction: sharpl left along Green Lane to Windy Ridge Farm itself, a dogleg left through the woods, straight on to the fields beyond, right down to where there used to be access to the ruined church until the new owners put up a new Berlin Wall to keep people out, and sharp right towards Kingsdown.

In fact the right turn comes out on a road linking Kingsdown and Ringwould, and I realise its about a decade since I walked down here, and that it used to be a wide path, wide enough for a car to drive down, until stopped by concrete blocks.

But a decade of undergrowth spread and the mild, wet summer means its just a single track, and looked nothing like I remember.

The path breaks out of the wood, and continues past a large tree separating two large fields.

No butterflies here, not now as there were few flowers, but a place to return to.

Best turn round and head back home, now.

Beyond is the entrance to the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail I, which we did not visit.
