This is Paul and my motto. Now what we mean by that is, most people will photograph something in the 'obvious' way= with the sun behind them or a gentle sidelight, the rule of thirds well observed! But, like I've said before, you can only start 'breaking' the rules IF and WHEN you know them... so, by doing that, you often take a photo in a way, through comp, or angle or tonal values that is NOT 'normal'= NOT the obvious= beyond the obvious.
I think creatives have a penchant for wearing head-dress of the stranger kind, a bit eccentric, out of the ordinary???
Most photographers seem to have some kind of 'headgear', I'm no different, this black number has protected me from snow, rain and sun... and I have protected it from the wind... and flying off into the sea or the great blue-yonder.
I wanted to do a portrait with a difference, with strong contrast, BEYOND THE OBVIOUS, there are quite a few things in it that make me very recognisable to people who know me, unmistakably.
It is not just through our faces that we are defined; we have many attributes that give us our identity.
Hope you have a lovely day and thanx for your visit, M, (*_*)

It started with a sketch of what I was wearing that morning, then I added bits from magazines and junk mail torn and saved, layers of paint, then more paint and ink, a postage stamp, brushes and fingers, and a logo from the bag of coffee beans finished, and, an index card. This was my playground this morning, right here on my work table looking out to the calm waters of the Saratoga Passage. #daisyyellowart

" Somewhere beyond the sea
somewhere waiting for me
my lover stands on golden sands
and watches the ships that go sailin'....."

I love Haitian art. This piece is in my garden. I wanted to honor the tragic damage and destruction in Haiti, and yet to also honor the beauty, talent and joy of the people. Haitian artists create houses and other objects like these, out of metal that they paint. Their work is always very colorful. I have a wall of my garden decorated with art work like this. I am so saddened by the earthquake damage.
In South Florida, we have many Haitians who live here, and we have followed the sad story of Haiti closely, from long before the earthquake. Boat loads of Haitians often show up on our shores and beaches, trying to escape the devastating life there. I am so so saddened by the horrendous and unthinkable lives of the people in Haiti right now. I tried to convey something about this.

Here's a poem I like by Wallace Stevens called
"Of the Surface of Things"
I
In my room, the world is beyond my understanding;
But when I walk I see that it consists of three or four
hills and a cloud.
II
From my balcony, I survey the yellow air,
Reading where I have written,
"The spring is like a belle undressing."
III
The gold tree is blue,
The singer has pulled his cloak over his head.
The moon is in the folds of the cloak.
As I approach, the fabric of space warps,
A kaleidoscope of swirling light,
A symphony of chaos, the cosmos carps,
In this celestial dance of day and night.
The singularity calls, a siren's song,
A gravitational pull, both fierce and dire,
Where time itself seems infinitely long,
And reality bends to a strange desire.
I tread the line between existence and nought,
A journey fraught with peril and with grace,
With every step, my very being is sought,
By forces that no mortal can embrace.
Beyond the singularity, the unknown lies,
Where truth and mystery in darkness rise.
A big file, good for zooming into. This is one of our favourite restaurants in Halifax, which we had discovered quite by chance on a visit to the city, before we even lived here. On this visit, Larry and I were with our friends Richard and John, grabbing a bite to eat prior to taking in the nearby Christmas light displays. I enjoyed the beer (can't remember the name of it), it had a very citrusy note to it. The rings are calamari, with dipping sauce. The middle photo is of the rare beef pho, which John and I had, and next to it, the scrumptious deep fried soft shelled crab with equally delicious satay sauce. The show-stopper was the pineapple chicken fried rice, served in the pineapple itself. Richard had the stir-fried beef. John and Richard also had spring and salad rolls as appetizers.
This portrays me as a person that seems pretty cool but also has a nerdy side to him. I wrestle and I am also involved in music which is something you don't really see.
I do myself in this image. I see that I can look normal but also have things that make me different.
I used the diptych technique to create this image.
The challenges I faced was deciding where to take the picture and what I should wear. I wish I could've worn my marching uniform but I only had my hat.
Part of a huge collection of cassette tapes that I possess. Artefacts of another era. Memories of other places, other times.
