I often question my habit of keeping every little scrap of paper, every greeting card, and every note Iโ€™ve ever received- until I come across a note like this one. My daughter handed me this one day in church and it brought a tear to my eye and a smile on my heartโ€ฆ same effect today when I found this.

I donโ€™t get to see her all that often, but there is not a day that goes by where I do not think of her- what sheโ€™s doing or a memory we shared. I do love you so my daughter dear!

In memory of my dad, Francis Leonard Douglas Harland

April 27, 1936 - December 4, 1998

An amazing man and father, I still miss him after all this time. There was nothing I couldn't, or wouldn't, tell him. He had a unique capability of offering advice without judgment and I have never met anyone kinder or more patient.

An engineer by trade, he was described by many of his peers as a genius, and he truly was. His hobbies were many: sailor and boat builder, pilot, traveler, photographer, Porsche enthusiast. He died doing one of the things he loved - he fell overboard during a storm 77 nautical miles off the coast of NZ while sailing around the world, and drowned. And while I would prefer that he was here today, I admire his spirit and his sense of adventure which enabled him to follow his dreams.

Half of his ashes are scattered at the start line to America's Cup in NZ. The other half are scattered off of 3rd Beach in Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC. I still think of him every single day.

Happy Father's Day!

Dad, I can't imagine being anyone at all without thinking of myself as your daughter. I want to sit down for days and days, to write an ode to our incredible relationship: to the way you have not only supported everything I ever wanted to be and do, but also throw yourself happily and headlong into my dreams so that they become our shared adventures. To the way you and Mom gave me and Scott a childhood so sweet and hopeful as to be the stuff of storybooks: bedtime rituals of books and song, road trips full of song too, lessons taught gently while we kneaded dough or walked the firefly-lit neighborhood after summer thunderstorms or looked for a missing pup. To our only rules growing up: Always Wear a Seat Belt, Never Ride in the Back of Trucks, and Don't Be Mean on Purpose. To the very real possibility that there isn't a thing you're not capable of doing. To how I have never doubted for one tiny second your love and respect for me, and how that sustains me as much at 30, all grown up and married, as it did when I was 4, all questions and and roller skates and freckles.

I'm pretty sure Ali and I are going to be rockin' parents. I'm very sure that's because of being your kid.

Love,

Your Kacka-Dacka Kid

This is a picture of my dad doing some laps up at Altamont Raceway. It was taken back in 2004 i think. He sure had fun that day. I miss you Dad. Happy Birthday!!!!!

Dada is completely shocked about something. What, I don't know.

The man is incapable of getting his photo taken, without making a crazy expression. Perhaps that is another reaon why he gets along with Jewfrohawk Ari, since he can only pose crazy, also.

Dada is a funny man. Go dad!

Award made by his daughter
