Praia da Rocha (Algarve) This is the best beach of Paradise...

Thank you for your visits comments and favs!

Seems like a “split” photo with one half looking like “Walking on Sunshine” (this song hit number 1 for the band) the other half reminds me of “Do You Want Crying” (kind of looks sad, stormy, this song hit number 3 for the band). It all depends upon which section of the waves you look at.

Katrina and the Waves were a British-American rock band best known for the 1985 hit "Walking on Sunshine". They also won the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Love Shine a Light”.

Taken at the well known Maho Beach where airplanes come in extremely low, right over the beach, in order to land on the short runway in St. Martin. On this particular day there were no people on the beach as the waves were extremely high.

This is my other favorite beach in all the world; Findhorn Beach in northern Scotland, where I also happened to live for many happy years. I seem drawn to living near endless empty beaches with views out across the water to distant mountains, whether that's in NZ or here looking out across the Moray Firth to the Scottish Highlands north of Inverness. On opposite sides of the planet in opposite seasons and in very different environs they are both so similar in nature and light it's just amazing :-)

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park occupies approximately the southern third of the island of Key Biscayne. The park is home to the Cape Florida Light, the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County. In 2005 it was listed as having the 8th best beach in the country. History of Coron. Source: wikitravel.org/en/Coron

The first inhabitants of Coron were the Tagbanuas who belong to the second wave of Indonesians who migrated to this area some 5,000 years ago. They were a nomadic, seafaring people, living mainly by fishing and subsistence agriculture. Although they are now sedentary (with the young using cell phones, etc.), they maintain many of their old customs, traditions and beliefs. Today, the Tagbanuas remain the dominant if not entire population of Coron.

In 1902 that Coron was registered as a town and the name of the town was officially changed from Penon de Coron to Coron.

From 1939 to the outbreak of World War II, the municipality experienced the mining boom. Labor shifted from farming to mining. In July 1942, the Japanese occupied the mining camps and resumed operation of the manganese mines. On September 24, 1944, a group of Japanese ships were sunk by American warplanes in Coron waters as the ships retreated from Manila Bay. To this day, about 10 or 12 of these World War II Japanese shipwrecks comprise what is considered one of the best dive sites in the world.

Excerpt from wx.toronto.ca:

Toronto's first photographic mural on a monumental scale has now been installed through a partnership between the City of Toronto's StreetARToronto (StART), Partners In Art (PIA) and the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. This collaboration provided a rare opportunity to commission a large-scale photographic artwork for the enjoyment of Toronto's residents and visitors.

Thanks to a $50,000 donation by Partners In Art, Winnipeg-based photographer Sarah Anne Johnson has created a large-scale, site-specific artwork for the west wall of The Westin Harbour Castle Convention Centre at 11 Bay St. The block-long building at the foot of Bay Street offers a unique wall surface highly suitable for a massive mural.

"This impressive creation of painting and photography is a testament to the tremendous work of all partners in the project – the City of Toronto’s StreetART program, Partners In Art and the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival,” said Mayor John Tory. “This partnership illustrates the power that can be generated between City programs and the creative sector. It's programs like this that make our streets more beautiful and interesting.”

"Sarah Anne Johnson has brought an incredible scene of beauty to the foot of Bay Street that complements perfectly the revitalization of Queens Quay and potential of the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal," said Councillor Pam McConnell (Ward 28 Toronto Centre-Rosedale). "The creative spirit of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival and the hard work of the City's StreetART program have delivered a wonderful program to be enjoyed by residents as well as visitors here for the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games."

Johnson used the site to take a playful yet considered approach to the pursuit of the utopian. Her evocative image, titled Best Beach, echoes the natural landscape lying just beyond the edge of the city, nestled between towering buildings that hover next to nearby Lake Ontario. Construction of the mural was completed in time for the opening of the CONTACT Festival and the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

The mural is located in a prominent and lively neighbourhood including popular tourist destinations such as the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal, Harbourfront Centre, and what will be the heart of the Games. The City is grateful to the Westin Harbour Castle for granting permission to use the 38-foot-tall (12-metre) and 144-foot wide (44-metre) wall for a commissioned photographic artwork.

"I could never stay long enough on the shore; the tang of the untainted, fresh, and free sea air was like a cool, quieting thought."

Plakias 740 60, Греция

Plakias (Greek: Πλακιάς) is a village on the south coast of the Greek island of Crete, in the Rethymno regional unit, about 30 kilometres south of the city of Rethymno. It is part of the municipal unit Foinikas. It is surrounded by mountains to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south. The name in Greek means "flat", because the town stands on an alluvial fan of material that has washed down the Kotsifou gorge directly to the north . This material has formed along the sea's edge into a long, fine, gold-hued sand beach, which shelves very gradually out into the bay, making it quite safe for swimming and hence, for family holidays.

Initially just a fishing jetty and a few houses, Plakias developed during the last few decades into a tourist resort. The first official mention of Plakias was in 1961, when it was recorded in a census as the permanent home of six fishermen. The recorded history of surrounding mountain villages like Myrthios and Sellia goes back to the 10th century, when the Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas (961 AD) built roads and bridges in order to link those villages, and there are some fragments of wall remaining from a fortified area on a hill top just northeast of the present main town . The local area is geographically suitable for a settlement, having plenty of agricultural space, and there may well have been a settlement there since Minoan times .

Plakias has a 1300-metre-long sandy beach and there are several other beaches within walking distance (Souda, Damnoni, Ammoudi, and Skhinaria). The southeastern end of the beach, near the Kakomouri headland, is used by nudists. The town is not on any major passage for traffic and hence traffic is minimal and it is quieter and less dusty than many other Greek resorts.

Parking along the main town road is difficult in the high season, but there is a large free-parking area just east of the main town. There are plenty of places to eat along the sea front, with the biggest cluster of tavernas at the west end. 8 kilometers to the east is the historic monastery of Preveli, which may have been founded as early as the 10th century. Due to its isolated position, it has played an important role in Cretan revolts against occupying forces such as the Nazis in World War II. Plakias is home to the "Youth Hostel Plakias", set in olive groves behind the town, which is famous among international backpackers as the 'most southerly hostel' in Europe. Also well-known are the cafes "Nufaro", (known locally as "Joe's bar") and the bars "Ostraco" and "Cozy Backyard". "World International Tourism Day" is celebrated each September with a big evening festival, with a free buffet meal and free traditional music, songs, and dancing performances in the main square.

There are two roads leading to Plakias through the mountain range that lies to the north, both of which run through spectacular gorges—to the north of Plakias, the Kotsifos Gorge, and to the northeast, the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. A good coastal motor track runs west beyond Souda to Rodakino beach, Frangokastello and Sfakiá. There are plenty of walks locally, and bolder walkers will enjoy the high green countryside beyond the coastal mountain range north of town. Mountain biking and cycle touring are other local attractions.

Look closely at the top and you might spot the paraglider which appears about as tiny as a seagull in the upper left corner. This is a terrific hike from La Jolla Shores beach at low tide be prepared to get wet feet at least. This beach is known for good surfing and also some nude subathers too. The dramatic cliffs crumble and erode through the seasons. Farther north you will walk beneath Torrey Pines Golf Course and then further north to Del Mar. The coastline is all public in theory at least you could keep walking north to Canada this way. In reality you would have to bypass some coastal areas due to military camps, power plants and shipping lanes.

I guess this particular trunk never got the memo that it succumbed to the salt water a while ago.

That's just the kind of "stick to it -ness" you put on a greeting card, or feature on an inspirational poster.
