Bern, the capital city of Switzerland, is built around a crook in the Aare River. It traces its origins back to the 12th century, with medieval architecture preserved in the Altstadt (Old Town).

Bern - Switzerland

bern, switzerland, july 2012.

toyed with a thought -

what if bears were extinct?

what if these were just people in suits; people who, on a shift basis, had to put these on because there were no more bears in the world and people had to pay a premium just to see them.

but this was just a bear in bern so i put the thought away and carried on.

Of all Swiss cities, BERN (Berne in French) is perhaps the most immediately charming. Crammed onto a steep-sided peninsula in a crook of the fast-flowing River Aare, its quiet, cobbled lanes, lined with sandstone arcaded buildings straddling the pavement, have changed barely at all in over five hundred years but for the adornment of modern shop signs and the odd car or tram rattling past. The hills all around, and the steep banks of the river, are still liberally wooded. Views, both of the Old Town’s clustered roofs and of the majestic Alps on the horizon, are breathtaking. Coming from Zürich or Geneva, it’s hard to remember that Bern – once voted Europe’s most floral city – is the nation’s capital, home of the Swiss parliament and wielder of final federal authority.

The Aare River is a tributary of the High Rhine and the longest river that rises and ends entirely within Switzerland. Its total length from its source to its junction with the Rhine is 295 kilometres.

Bern is the capital of Switzerland and is referred to as the federal city by the Swiss. The population of Bern is just over 138,000 making it the fourth most populous city in Switzerland. The official language of Bern is German but the most spoken language is the Alemmanic Swiss German dialect called Bernese German. The historic Old Town of Bern became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and Bern is ranked in the top 10 cities in the world for quality of life. Bern was founded in 1191 by Berthold V, Duke of Zahringen.
