Bern, the capital city of Switzerland, is built around a crook in the Aare River. It traces its origins back to the 12th century, with medieval architecture preserved in the Altstadt (Old Town).

From Wikipedia: "The Battle of New Bern was fought on 14 March 1862, near the city of New Bern, North Carolina, as part of the Burnside Expedition of the American Civil War... Although the defenders fought behind breastworks that had been set up before the battle, their line had a weak spot in its center that was exploited by the attacking Federal soldiers... New Bern came under Federal control, and remained so for the rest of the war."

The clock tower was built between 1218 and 1220 as a guard tower for the city’s western fortifications. When the city walls expanded outwards, the tower was renovated and eventually changed in the mid-14th century into a prison for women who had had sexual relations with priests.

The tower was severely damaged in a fire in 1405 with repairs continuing well into the 20th century. The prison was abandoned after the fire and in the 15th century, an astronomical clock and bell were added, giving the tower its name – Zytglogge (time bell). In 1981-83, the tower was renovated back to its appearance in 1770.

"The building with the copper domes is the Federal Palace which houses the Swiss Federal Assembly (legislature) and the Federal Council (executive). It is the seat of the government of Switzerland and parliament of the country. It consists of three interconnected buildings in Bern's old city. The two chambers of the Federal Assembly, the National Council and Council of States, meet in the parliament building.

Bern is the de facto capital of Switzerland. With a population of about 133,000, Bern is the fifth-most populous city in Switzerland, behind Zürich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne. The metropolitan area had a population of 660,000 in 2000.

Bern is also the capital of the canton of Bern, the second-most populous of Switzerland's cantons. The official language is German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect, Bernese German. In 1983, the historic old town is located in a pronounced meander of the Aare, a major river of the Swiss Plateau.

The Origin of the name "Bern" is uncertain. According to the local legend, the founder of the city of Bern vowed to name the city after the first animal he met on the hunt which turned out to be a bear. The bear is the heraldic animal of the seal and coat of arms of Bern dating to at least the 1220s.

It has long been considered likely that the city was named after the Italian city of Verona, which at the time was known as Bern in Middle High German. The city was sometimes referred to as Bern im Üechtland to distinguish it from Verona. As a result of the finding of the Bern zinc tablet in the 1980s, it is now more common to assume that the city was named after a pre-existing toponym of Celtic origin, possibly *berna "cleft". "

A beautiful city. The city centre is all made up of houses like these. The water here was so pure that I filled my water bottle from a fountain in the middle of the road.
