Berkeley Castle (which dates from the 12th century) has been the property of the Berkeley family for some 850 years, a record of home ownership which is unmatched in England. It is surrounded by a 6,000 acre estate. King Edward II was imprisoned in its Norman keep after his deposition and later murdered there in 1327. The writer Vita Sackville-West described it as 'savage, and old, and unique' and 'neither cosy nor manageable'. It is now the home of Charles and Daisy Berkeley.

Berkeley's original shoreline was about where Second Street and the eastern side of Aquatic Park are located today. In 1853 a private wharf was built at the foot of what is now Delaware Street, and a working waterfront with factories and piers developed along the shoreline later in the century.

This pier, constructed by the Golden Gate Ferry Company under a 1926 franchise from the City, now extends from the Berkeley Marina, which was built on landfill out into the Bay well beyond the original shoreline. It is a reminder of the earliest urban settlement in Berkeley and a time when goods and people were transported mainly by water. The pier accommodated ferries that carried cars across San Francisco Bay. After big events in Berkeley, such as football games at the University of California, hundreds of cars would back up for hours waiting to board the ferry back to San Francisco. After the Bay Bridge was completed and opened to automobile traffic in 1936 the pier was converted to recreational use, including fishing. Approximately 3,000 feet of the original 3.5 mile length of the pier remain in usable condition.

Decommissioning began at Berkeley Power Station in 1989 when Reactor number one was shutdown, making it the first commercial nuclear power station to be decommissioned in the United Kingdom. Berkeley was highly important as the technical laboratories on site supported developments in all the power stations across the country, whilst assuring all nuclear provision was safe and up to an acceptable standard.

Eighteen months ago South Gloucestershire & Stroud College took interest in the site and today a new campus is being built for engineering and information technology students, hinged from the needs of industry. The aim being for the whole site to be eventually turned into a science park.

Photographing Berkeley Nuclear Power Station has allowed me identify and understand the previous uses of each of the buildings contained on the twenty- acre site. Over multiple visits I have been able to develop my approach of illustrating the vacated buildings, showing the locations in which two thousand employees once operated and managed the Power Station.

In honor of George Berkeley's 330th birthday a piper played at the Campanile. The University and then the town were named for him.
