After underground mining ceased, an open pit mine was opened in 1955 to extract less concentrated low grade copper ore that remained in the near surface. The pit reached a depth of 1,780 feet before it too closed in 1982. At that time the pumps were turned off and the pit began to fill with water.

Built around 1885, supposedly a copy of a castle by the same name in England. Used to be open to the public, but now it is closed and no one knows who the owners are.

I would not like to live here, cause the windows are small (it must be awfully dark inside!) and the cars on HWY9 zip just some 100 feet away.

The English-Norman Berkeley Castle, a National and West Virginia registered historical landmark, was built by Colonel Samuel Taylor Suite between 1885 and 1891. Colonel Suit was a wealthy businessman who fought in the Civil War. When he was 46, Colonel Suit met and fell in love with Rosa Pelham, the 17-year old daughter of Congressman Charles Pelham of Alabama. He tried to persuade her to marry him, but she turned him down. He tried again when the two met five years later, successfully winning her hand with the pledge to build her a castle in the town of Bath (the official name of Berkeley Springs). That afternoon, they climbed the hill to Warm Springs Ridge and marked off the location for their castle. They purchased the land, and a few days later they were married.

This project is the University of Bristol's award winning annual archaeological excavations at Berkeley Castle aims to build up a detailed picture of the history and archaeology of the castle and the associated settlement of Berkeley.

Dr Stuart Prior, Senior Teaching Fellow in Archaeological Practice and one of the site directors, says: "Our current focus can best be described as ‘Minster, Manor & Town’. By combining the results of detailed archaeological fieldwork with information contained in the castle’s impressive collection of 20,000 historical documents, the project will add greatly to our knowledge and understanding of the early medieval period and the subsequent changes in landscape and society that occurred with the coming of the Normans and the erection of a castle on the former minster site.

Archaeology3Ds role was in the creation of a 3D model that both engaged with the archaeological research and the project. In recent years the business' founder, Alex Birkett, has been teaching techniques of archaeological recording using photographs to create 3D models.
