This past Sunday Berkeley closed Shattuck Avenue to traffic and opened it to people--just people straight through the center of town. And the people came--tons of them. No official events, no one selling anything. Just people entertaining each other or just being sociable.

This small watery vortex, only a few inches in diameter, forms regularly along the west side of the Model Yacht Basin in Berkeley's Aquatic Park. It is presumably caused by the ebb tide draining through a tube that connects this basin with the bay.
The top half of this image consists of reflections of waterside trees, seen on the far wall of this tiny vortex. The center of this vortex is full of small bubbles, and a few red and orange pieces of vegetation.
