Fort Marlborough was established to secure the British quest for spices and interests on the West Coast of Sumatra. Joseph Collet who served as the Governor of British Bencoolen named this fortification "Fort Marlborough" in honor of John Churchill, 1st duke of Marlborough. The Construction on this star-shaped fort with a triangular-shaped bastion on each corner began in 1714 using convict, local and Indian labor.

The Gate of Fort Marlborough (Indonesian: Benteng Marlborough, also known as Malabero) is an English fort located in Bengkulu City, Bengkulu province, Sumatra island. Built between 1713-1719 by the East India Company under the leadership of Governor Joseph Collett as a defensive fort for the British Bencoolen and was one of the strongest British fort in the eastern region, second only to Fort St. George in Madras, India.
The entry fee for sight-seeing is 2500 rupiahs, but I recomended you also pay for tour gudie. They really know lots of trivia, such as why the road curved before the gate. It is because... No, I won't reveal. Ask them. :P
