Lenny's Pizza on 86th Street In Bensonhurst Brooklyn closed its doors for good this February 19, 2023.
The pizzeria gained it's fame when it was in Saturday Night Fever in 1977. In the movie, John Travolta orders 2 slices of pizza. He puts one slice on top of the other and then proceeds to eat them like anyone from New York would eat a single regular slice. Lenny's Pizza began to sell two slices in this fashion irl and called it "The Manero" after Travolta's character.
At the time, 86th Street was famous for the trestle (I know it's an elevated train or "an el", but we Brooklynites call it a trestle and that's what it is lol ), guido's driving slowly down the street listening to loud music "cruisin' down 86th street" , and it's blocks and blocks of Italian storefronts.
I did decide to mix two scenes from the movie together but Tony Manero is famous for that white suit and ♫♫♫ dancing.. yeah ♫♫♫
Anyway this is my dedication to the end of an era, the closing of a landmark after serving customers since 1953

#subwaysaturday - Back in the winter of 2006, a big snow storm hit the NYC area in February. Operations on the above ground portions of the system were hampered as the MTA tried to keep the lines clear. As the snow comes down, we see a rerouted B train running over the Sea Beach line at 20th Avenue in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn. The train is made up of R40 slants. One of my best memories about these cars were how toasty the interiors were on cold days like this.
We are continuing our weekly highlight of the many fabulous storefronts which we have photographed over the years which have privilege signs. Tony’s Luncheonette located on New Utrecht Avenue in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn had a great Coca-Cola privilege sign with green porcelain enamel lettering. When we photographed Tony’s in 2005 for our book, “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” we also interviewed the owner, Anthonio Lombardo, who told us that he had purchased the coffee shop in 1972 and that the interior including its circular wrap-around lunch counter was original and was installed in the 1950s. Sadly, this old-school gem closed in 2013 and we are not sure what happened to the gorgeous signage.

I think I saw Asian Americans wearing masks in 2019; at the time I thought it was out of solidarity with the protesters in Hong Kong. 86th Street, Bensonhurst. Brooklyn, NY
Lunar New Year celebrations on Eighth Avenue, Sunset Park (Brooklyn). Sunset Park used have the highest number of Asian Americans in Brooklyn, but it's been eclipsed by Bensonhurst.
