The ancient city of Aspendos (modern city of Belkis, ancient city of Pamphylia) is located on Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast forty-seven kilometers from the modern city of Antalya. Its spectacularly well-preserved theatre is one of the best examples of Roman theatre construction in the world. While there was probably an earlier ancient theatre on the site, it was completely obliterated by the Roman theatre, which was built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD). A statue of the building's architect, Zeno, stands in the south parodos. The inscription under the statue records the thanks of the people for the gift of the theatre and says that Zeno was given a large garden near the stadium for his work. Inscriptions in Greek and Latin on either side of the skene read that the wealthy brothers Curtius Crespinus and Curtius Auspicatus built the theatre and dedicated it to "the Gods of the Country and the Imperial House."

In the 3rd century AD a parapet was built between the orchestra and the cavea to protect the audience from gladiatorial and wild animal shows. The theatre continued to be used through the Byzantine era and into the Seljuk Turkish period. The Seljuk leader Alaeddin Kaykabat I renovated the theatre in the 1200s AD, decorating it with painted tiles and turning it into a palace. The Seljuks built the tower-like entranceway over the central outer door of the skene, which remains today.

The theatre at Aspendos is without doubt the best-preserved example of "eastern" Roman theatre construction in the world. Bieber identifies distinctions between "western" and "eastern" Roman theatres citing the straight, multi-storied scaenae frons with a higher, seven foot, stage as characteristic of "eastern" theatre construction techniques found at Aspendos, Priene, Miletus, and Termessos. These Hellenistic influenced theatres in Asia Minor are in contrast to the "western" theatres of Italy, Spain, France, and Africa which have recessed niches for the doors in the scaenae frons and a lower, four-foot high stage.

In addition to the distinction of being a prime example of "eastern" Roman theatre construction, Aspendos is further distinguished by being the only example of purely Roman construction in Turkey with the cavea completely and seamlessly joined to the skene. Although influenced by the Hellenistic practice of building a horseshoe-shaped cavea against a hillside, the barrel-vaulted substructures supporting the upper levels of the cavea are purely Roman. Both the upper and lower levels of the cavea are made of near-marble quality limestone and are separated by a single diazomata. The forty-one rows of seats in the cavea are subdivided by ten radiating staircases in the lower seating section and twenty-one staircases in the upper section. A barrel-vaulted tunnel provides architectural support for the upper cavea and runs behind the sole diazomata that separates the two seating levels. Surrounding the uppermost row of seating at the top of the cavea is a colonnaded gallery with fifty-nine vaulted arches. This sheltered walkway with its impressive array of arches serves as a convenient access to the various seating sections and also contributes to the excellent acoustics evident at Aspendos. The colonnade is thought to be a later addition to the theatre, and brickwork still present in the gallery is the remains of Seljuk repair work. The first row of seats in the cavea was reserved for senators, judges, and ambassadors, and the second row was reserved for other notable figures. A number of the seats, especially in the upper rows of the cavea, bear the inscribed names of theatre patrons. Various sources indicate that women sat only in the upper rows of seats. The seating capacity of the Aspendos theatre was once estimated at 10,000 to 15,000, but recent attendance at the Aspendos Culture and Film Festival has shown that it can hold over 20,000.

Two tower-like buildings (the versura) flank the stage and connect the skene to the cavea. Doors at the orchestra level of the versura (the aditus maximus) served as side entrances for performers as well as the audience , and doors at the stage level provided entrances and exits for actors. This architectural feature served to enclose the Roman theatre and the covered parodoi provided two significant platforms for seats of honor (the Tribunalia). The Tribunalia, or seats of judgment, were reserved for magistrates and priestesses of Vesta and, in the event of gladiatorial games, victors would receive recognition from the praetor who sat in these seats. The Tribunalia overlooked a seven foot high stage (possibly of wood) that extended from the scaenae frons and connected the two versura. This stage no longer exists but evidence of five small doors in the face of the stage are considered part of a later Roman sub-stage corridor leading to holding areas for animals used in blood-sport events.

The versura also served as the main entrance to the cavea seating at Aspendos. Passageways within the structure (ininera versurarum) and a series of staircases led to entrances at the stage level and also to the diazomata above the first level of cavea seating and the upper arcaded gallery above and behind the highest tier of cavea seating.

The skene, which is as high as the cavea, is made of regular blocks of conglomerate, except for window and door frames in limestone. The scaenae frons has two levels, each with twenty free-standing columns arranged in squares of four around niches for statuary. The columns of the lower level are Ionic, while those of the upper level are Corinthian. Five doors open from the scaenae frons onto the stage. The central door, the porta reggia, is the largest; the two doors on either side of the porta reggia are the smaller porta hospitales. At the top of the second level the columns support a triangular pediment, at the center of which is a frieze of Dionysus with scrolls of flowers. Only those parts of the scaenae frons that were attached to the skene wall have been preserved. A wooden roof over the stage sloped backwards towards the skene wall and served to improve acoustics and provide protection from the elements. Additional water runoff was directed outside the theatre by means of a series of drainage channels such as can be seen surrounding the orchestra and in the floor of the Tribunalia.

The outer wall of the skene has four rows of windows, three of square windows and one, the second row up from the bottom, of arched windows. The molding that runs between the arches is at the same level as the diazomata of the cavea. The outer wall mimics the interior of the theatre in other ways; for example, five doors, the largest in the middle, open onto the street behind the theatre. A tower-like structure was built in the Seljuk period around and over the central door. Corbels, rectangular projections of stone pierced by round postholes, surround the windows in the topmost row of the outer wall of the skene. It has been proposed that the corbels held poles for a linen awning, or velum, that partially sheltered the audience.

Ancient performances at Aspendos were funded by civic institutions and admission was charged for attending plays and competitions. Tickets, made from bone, ivory, metal, or fired clay inscribed with row and seat numbers, were issued to patrons. Performances continue at Aspendos today in the form of music concerts, opera, and ballet, most notably the International Opera & Ballet Festival which opened its tenth annual season with a production of Aida in 2003. In 2001, in the article, "Bad Vibrations Worrying Turkey," The Washington Post reports that the Culture Ministry of Turkey encourages the use of historical sites for cultural and art activities: "This practice contributes significantly to better recognition of our antique treasures, cultural tourism and the artistic improvement of our country." However, Archeologists as well as a few ministry officials have questioned the impact of high decibel, amplified music on the ancient structure and are questioning the continued use of the theatre as a popular modern performance space. "We don't need to wait until the stones start falling," said Nevzat Cevik, an archaeologist and professor at Mediterranean University in the nearby southern coastal city of Antalya. "It's already clear … when 10,000 people are jumping at the same time, it's an earthquake."

An important city of ancient Pisdia, Altinkaya (Selge), northwest of the Koprulu Canyon National Park, is reached by a winding mountain road. The city walls, towers, cisterns, temple to Zeus, agora, stadium, theater, gymnaslum and necropolis remain from this commercial city that stood at an elevation of 950 meters. Historians verify that Selge had direct trade with Antalya, which brought it prosperity.

Although the Manavgat Waterfalls are not high, milky white, foaming water rushes powerfully over the rocks. Next to the waterfalls shady tea gardens and restaurants make the falls a pleasant, cool resting spot, especially welcome after a day of sightseeing. You can take a delightful boat trip up the Manavgat river to explore this lovely area further.

Side, one of the best-known classical sites in Turkey, was an ancient harbor whose name meant pomegranate. Today a pretty resort town, its ancient ruins, two sandy beaches, many shops and extensive tourist accommodation attract throngs of visitors. There are numerous cafes and restaurants with a view of the sea, and the shops that line the narrow streets seli typical Turkish handicrafts including leather goods and Turkey's famous beautiful gold jewelery. Tne magnificent theater of the ancient city, built on colonnaded arches, is the largest in tne wncle area. (Closed for restoration) Other monuments include the agora, the Apollo Temple. whicn is situated near the sea. a fountain and necropolis. The extensive Roman baths. now a museum. houses one of Turkey's finest archaelogical collections.

East of Side, tucked in pine forests the holiday resorts of Sorgun, Titreyen Gol (Blue Flag) and Kizilagac are both popular for their sandy beaches and sparkling sea. The atmosphere is relaxed, the accommadation plentiful and the activities endless.

West of Side, the holiday centers of Kumkoy, Colakli and Kamelya also offer sun and sea, in close proximity to ancient sites. In the Pamphlyian Seleucia (Bucaksihlar), 15km northeast of Side, are the remains (in good condition) of Roman baths, temples, churches, a mausoleum, theatre and agora.

The temple was probably built in the second half of the 2nd century AD according to the Greek temple design. It was a hexastyle peripteral Corinthian temple measuring 29.5m x 16.37m

The great ruins are among the most notable in Asia Minor. They cover a large promontory where a wall and a moat separate it from the mainland. During medieval times, the wall and moat were repaired and the promontory houses a wealth of structures.

There are colossal ruins of a theater complex, the largest of Pamphylia, built much like a Roman amphitheater that relies on arches to support the sheer verticals. The Roman style was adopted because Side lacked a convenient hillside that could be hollowed out as in the usual Greek fashion more typical of Asia Minor. The theater is less well preserved than the Aspendos theater, but it is almost as large, seating 15,000 - 20,000 people. With time and the shifting of the earth, the scena wall has collapsed over the stage and the proscenium is in a cataract of loose blocks. It was converted into an open-air sanctury with two chapels during Byzantine times (5-6th c.)

The well preserved city walls provide an entrance to the site through the Hellenistic main gate (Megale Pyle) of the ancient city, although this gate from the second century BC is badly damaged. Next comes the colonnaded street although the marble columns once there do not exist anymore. All that remains is a few broken stubs near the old Roman baths. The street leads to the a public bath, restored as a museum displaying Roman period statues and sarcophagi. Next is the square agora with in the middle the remains of the round Tyche and Fortuna temple (2nd c. BC), a periptery with twelve columns. In later times it was used as a trading center where pirates sold slaves. The current remains of the theatre, which was used for gladiator fights and later as a church, and the monumental gate date back to the 2nd century. The early Roman Temple of Dionysus is near the theater. The fountain gracing the entrance is restored. At the left side are the remains of a Byzantine Basilica. A pubic bath has been restored[2]

The remaining ruins of Side include three temples, an aqueduct, and a nymphaeum. Side's nymphaeum – a grotto with a natural water supply dedicated to the nymphs – was an artificial grotto or fountain building of elaborate design.

Turkish archaeologists have been excavating Side since 1947 and intermittently continue to do so

"Die Gebirgsketten des Taurus beginnen als Zweitausender beim Mittelmeer (Muğla, Antalya) und drehen dann nach Nordosten bis fast zum Schwarzen Meer und in Richtung Armenien. Dabei teilen sie sich in Parallelketten und reichen stellenweise an die 4000 Meter heran. Die Erosion entlang geologischer Störungen und durch Flusstäler konnte mit der alpiden Hebung nicht ganz schritt halten, weil die Gebirgsbildung hier besonders heftig war. Die Gebirge setzen sich in einem riesigen Bogen über die Südost-Türkei und tausende Kilometer in das persische Elburs- bzw. Zagros-Gebirge und den Hindukusch fort. Viele dieser Regionen werden periodisch von Erdbeben und auch Vulkanismus betroffen, wenn sich Teile der Erdkruste verschieben.

Auch im Osttaurus treten NO-SW parallelen Kettensysteme auf, wie sie in Mittelanatolien typisch sind. Nach Osten fächern sie sich immer weiter auf. Die Höhe der einzelnen Gebirgszüge liegt zwischen 3000 und 4400 m, die Talbereiche zwischen den Höhenzügen um 2000 m.

Südlich des Berges Süphan dehnen sich die Taurusketten bis zum Vansee und Hakkari. Die südöstlichen Ausläufer sind jedoch um durchschnittlich 1000 m niedriger.

Im Umkreis des Vansees - auf halbem Wege zwischen dem Nordirak und Armenien - treffen die beiden Gebirgszonen auf das Armenische Hochland. Hier haben ganze Ketten von Vulkanen mächtige vulkanische Decken entstehen lassen. Neben dem Ararat (5137 m) und dem Berg Süphan (4058 m) sind der Vulkan Nemrut (3050 m) und weiter westlich der Erciyes Dağı (3891 m) und der Hasan Dağı (3268 m) zu erwähnen.[1]

Konyaaltı is a district of Antalya, Turkey. The name Konyaaltı (pronounced [konjaaltɯ]), which mean "below Konya", stems from the fact the city of Antalya was an administrative part of the city of Konya during the Ottoman Empire and the location of the beach is where the steep cliff of the city ends. It is situated beneath the old city of Antalya extending miles toward west with various kinds of beaches from sand to pebbles. The water is a little cooler compared to other beaches of Antalya because of an underground creek flowing to the sea. There are modern underground facilities for aesthetical reasons. Transportation is easy by means of a buses etc. It is reachable by foot as well.

Kemer is a seaside resort and district of Antalya Province on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, 40 km (25 mi) west of the city of Antalya.

Kemer is on the Gulf of Antalya, 53 km (33 mi) of sea coast with the skirts of the western Taurus mountains behind. The coast has the typical Mediterranean hot, dry weather and warm sea. Until the early 1980s this was a quiet rural district but today the town of Kemer and coastal villages in the district play a very important part in tourism in Turkey.

Research shows only that Kemer was the Lycian town of Idryos.

Kemer was called Eski Köy (old village) until in 1916 - 1917, a 23 km (14 mi) long stone wall was built to channel the mountain stream water and protect the town from flooding, which until then had been a persistent problem. The name Kemer refers to those walls.

Until the 1960s there was no coast road and the district was accessible only by boat. Then a road was built and from the 1980s onwards this was followed by a great investment in infrastructure, planned by the state and funded by the World Bank, aimed at developing a large tourist trade.

Tourism in Kemer

One of the major attractions of Kemer is its natural beauty; sea, mountains and pine forest combine in harmony. The shore from Beldibi to Tekirova consists of unspoilt beaches in bays of various sizes, mostly stoney rather than sand. With easy transportation, good communication and other municipal services Kemer has a large proportion of the hotel bed capacity of the Antalya region, and is a comfortable and peaceful holiday coast with internationally accepted reputation, attracting large numbers of visitors from countries such as Germany, The Netherlands and in recent years predominantly families from Russia. Many of the visitors come as part of low-cost all-inclusive package deals but tourism is still the mainstay of the local economy. There are so many visitors that most shops in Kemer are set up to sell things like leather jackets to overseas visitors and trade in the euro as well as the Turkish lira.

Göynük (Goynuk) Canyon, Ulupınar, Olympos, Chimera, Phaselis, Three Islands and Eco Park are the touristics points of Kemer Region.

The town of Kemer is vibrant with clubs, bars and restaurants, blue flag beaches and a 320 capacity yacht marina. Popular coastal villages include Beldibi, Kiriş, Çayova, Aslanbucak, Kuzdere, Beycik, Çamyuva, Göynük, and Çıralı.

Annual events in the area include art exhibitions in Phaselis, boat races, WRC (World Rally Championship), Turkey Offshore Championship, Turkey Motocross Championship,Phaselis Art Festival, and Kemer Carnival. International pop stars and Djs, such as Tarkan and Dj Tiesto, give summer concerts on this coast.
