The salt beef bagel at Nana Fanny's features hand-rolled, boiled and baked beigels (bagels), filled generously with slow-cooked, buttery soft Irish brisket, cured in a secret family brine. Served hot, topped with thick-cut pickles and strong English mustard it is optionally served as a reuben with sauerkraut and flame-melted Swiss raclette.

Nana Fanny’s, a fourth-generation family business started from a barrow on Brick Lane in 1944 by Fanny Lester, has been serving East End Jewish street food across London markets for nearly eight decades. They found a permanent home at Borough Market around 2012–2014, and are now run by Andrew Lester. Best known for hot salt beef sandwiches, Nana Fanny’s also favorites like latkes, schnitzel, falafel, and salads, with breads and bagels sourced from their own Moishe’s Bagelry & Bakery in the market.

Whenever I am in London I always make sure I visit this beigel shop and have a hot salt beef beigel (and maybe a smoked salmon and cream cheese one too) for my breakfast as well as a coffee from coffee@, a great start to a days shopping at Spitalfields market.

St. Viateur Bagel Shop, at 263 St. Viateur Ouest, was opened in 1957 by Holocaust survivor Myer Lewkowicz. Current owner, Joe Morena oversees a family business that has grown to include multiple bakeries, cafés, a food truck, and an online store. The flagship shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day, each and rolled and baked in a wood-burning oven.

The Montreal bagel, sometimes called a beigel, or in French a beguel, is a smaller, sweeter, denser cousin of the New York bagel, hand-shaped with a larger hole, boiled in honey-sweetened water, and baked in a wood-fired oven that gives it its characteristic blistered surface. Made with malt and egg but no salt, the style was brought to Montreal by Eastern European Jewish immigrants. One account credits Chaim (Hyman) Seligman with popularizing it by selling bagels from a horse-drawn carriage along the Main; his associates Myer Lewkowicz and Jack Shlafman later helped establish St-Viateur Bagel and Fairmount Bagel, respectively.
