Breeding behaviour
Where possible, the birds excavate a nesting burrow into the soil. Sometimes they will make use of Manx shearwater or rabbit burrows. Where burrowing is not possible, the birds nest under boulders or in cracks and cavities in cliffs.
The birds defend the nesting site and its immediate surround, and use it in subsequent years. Puffins lay only a single egg, in late April or early May. Both parents incubate it for 36-45 days, and they share the feeding duties until the chick is ready to fledge.
The fledging period is very variable, ranging from 34 to 60 days, depending on the area and year.
Adult birds desert their young shortly before they are ready to leave the nest. The timing of the breeding in puffin colonies is highly synchronised, and so the departure of all adults takes place within a few days.
The young birds leave their nest burrow and make their way to the sea, normally under cover of darkness to avoid predators. In some colonies, for instance in Iceland, nearby bright lights confuse the young birds, which then fly into the light and end up on city streets.
Puffins usually reach breeding age at 5-6 years old, and often live for 20 years.
I was always very well behaved as a child and never asked for anything, I think that's why the following story has become almost legendary in our family! LOL
When I was 2 and we were on holiday I saw a doll buggy in a toy shop. It was a miniture replica of my own and I really wanted it tobe like my mum & push my baby doll around in. My parents were so surprised when I threw a tantrum (my only one ever) in the shop because I wanted the buggy so badly. They didn't give in to my tantrum then, but at the end of the week they did go back to the store & buy it for me. I didn't have any photos of the tantrum but this one was taken on that holiday. I've added the date & journaling in pen now that the details have been double checked with my parents.

These crows are always up to something, but I have no idea what. Sometimes in the summer I see many of them laying with their wings spread on the ground. I hope to figure out why one of these days!
It was a good dolphin day yesterday, with lots going on, although it wasn't easy to photograph. This is one example of a behaviour which doesn't always make for a great photograph (it lacks the "wow" factor of the breaches, admittedly). This dolphin slapped its tail on the surface of the water a few times, possibly communicating to other dolphins in the area.
These students were preparing for the Yosakoi Festival.
I just asked whether I can take a photo of them, automatically they gave me the V-signs.
As the sun set, Plymouth harbour became the backdrop for the festival launch event. Legendary saxophonist Evan Parker played with Behaviour, a large group of performers playing invented instruments, laptops and more.

Car park solution to balls being kicked against a noisy fence. Resident committee agreed to redesgnate an unused car park spot further away as a play area during the day. Residents can move the trapese easily at night if someone wants to use it. There are currently no disabled residents wanting the space. Residents donated some furniture, one donated the sign and they are also raising money to make it more attractive to sit and to play there - so a dilapidated corner is a community space.
Unfortunately I missed a shot of a green woodpecker about 4m behind me (it flew off when I turned) but I was fascinated by this fella. He eventually shot into the undergrowth - nesting material perhaps?
