A Walmart cheapo on which to practice my Begonia-growing skills.

A wonderful winter deciduous perennial begonia from the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it colonizes boulders receiving spray from waterfalls, in combination with mosses and other similar moisture loving things. It makes a great draping plant for containers, and will tend to colonize within the garden because of the little bulbils which form in the branches at the end of the growing season. These tend to fall off as the plant goes dormant, and grow in the garden. Late to get started, it provides wonderful clear orange color all summer into mid fall. Ironic that it tends to get powdery mildew if given overhead irrigation in my garden, given that it grows within the mist zone of waterfalls in habitat.

years and years Begonias live all-but neglected and provide new plants to face near-neglect later

my mom, her best friend, and myself have all been growing this same begonia for years. karen, my mom's friend, once saw a picture of it blooming in a martha stewart magazine. both my mother and karen are accomplished gardeners, but none of us have ever managed to get it to flower.

my mom gave this particular plant to my friend annie for her apartment; annie subsequently moved back to chicago, so i inherited it. it was functionally dead when i got it this past july, but i cut it back and set it up in my office by the window. it's flourishing now, and (wonder of wonders!) blooming.

Lots of new growth. Stem cuttings, even if just one node, root from below and send shoots above to form new plants above, when I lay them on slightly moist sphagnum moss in the terrarium. Half leaves also root, waiting for new plantlets to appear.
