This church was built in 1822 and is a Rijksmonument (national heritage site). It is the third church on this site.

The first was built in 1434 ( or 1438?). A fire destructed this church in 1542 and a gothic church was built, but the church was demolished in 1820 due to its poor condition after which this third church was built in 1822.

What a beautiful day it was February 27, in the province of North Holland! This is a late afternoon picture a part of the historical Dutch Designed dike of polder Beemster. Spijkerboor, 2021.

The Beemster is the first so-called polder in the Netherlands that was reclaimed from a lake, the water being extracted out of the lake by windmills. The Beemster Polder was dried during the period 1609 through 1612. Because of its historical relevance, and because the original structure of the area is still largely intact, the Beemster polder was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1999.

The Beemster Polder was created in 1612. Before that time, it was a lake. It is located in the province of North Holland, north of Amsterdam. The draining of this lake was the first large project and therefore one of the first polders. This polder was designed in a geometric pattern, according to the principles of that time, the Renaissance. Nowadays it is a well-ordered agricultural landscape of fields, roads, canals, ditches, dykes and villages.

In 1999 the Beemster polder was added to the Unesco world heritage list.

The Beemster is the first so-called polder in the Netherlands that was reclaimed from a lake, the water being extracted out of the lake by windmills. The Beemster Polder was dried during the period 1609 through 1612. It has preserved intact its well-ordered landscape of fields, roads, canals, dykes and settlements, laid out in accordance with classical and Renaissance planning principles. A grid of canals parallels the grid of roads in the Beemster. The grids are offset: the larger feeder canals are offset by approximately one kilometer from the larger roads.

Because of its historical relevance, and because the original structure of the area is still largely intact, the Beemster was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1999.

Beemster polder dike with trees. Already a long time I wanted to capture the polder dike with its trees in a way like this. All at a sudden I had the opportunity. The shadow of the clouds on the yellow field was disappearing in the direction of the dike. I was just in time to create a picture with a yellow field in the sunlight and a dike with trees in the dark. The dark clouds finished the capture. Living below sealevel: How do they do that? First build a Dike around the lake and a Ringvaart around the dike. Finally pump the lake empty and build the new land.

The canal was opened in the year 1824. Imagine passing by all the sailing ships in those times, pulled by horses at the other side..

Update 2017: All these trees are gone due to the reconstruction of the road. New trees are planted now.

History:

Koning Willem I wilde daar snel verbetering in brengen.
