August 16 and 17 were days of great anxiety to the people living in the areas devastated by the mountain fire. Although 1,600 men were engaged in fighting the fire, little more could they do than protect the villages threatened by the flames. Various had to be evacuated, although some residents refused to leave and stayed to defend their houses from the blaze. Belmonte, a village of 3500 inhabitants which I recently introduced here, was on the verge of evacuation
On August 17 the media informed that the perimeter of the fire was 160 Km, although 90% of it were under control. The smoke you see afar was reported to have reached Madrid, where its scent was cleary felt in the air.
On August 20, the mountain fire was declared -- if not extinguished -- dominated, not before 25,000 ha of the Estrela Highland Geopark had beed destroyed by the flames.
Surveillance operations continue.

As it has beed rather windy and wet outdoors, the Dragon spent most of the day lazing around on his various beds, in this case a cardboard bed in my study. I think it is safe to say that he was quite bored.

Montepulciano, Italy
Relais San Bruno
Tuscany
Pienza Province
Montepulciano is a medieval and Renaissance hill town and commune in the Italian province of Siena in southern Tuscany. It sits high on a 605-metre (1,985 ft) limestone ridge, 13 kilometers (8 mi) east of Pienza, 70 kilometers (43 mi) southeast of Siena, 124 kilometers (77 mi) southeast of Florence, and 186 kilometers (116 mi) north of Rome by car.
Montepulciano is a major producer of food and drink. Renowned for its pork, cheese, "pici" pasta, lentils, and honey, it is known worldwide for its wine. Connoisseurs consider its Vino Nobile, which should not be confused with varietal wine merely made from the Montepulciano grape, among Italy's best. – Wikipedia

My dash around Cornwall ended with an hour at Kynance Cove on the Lizard. It's always beed a favourite place, and was the last place we visited together there, eating fish and chips as the sun set. It was dull grey when I arrived and explored the beach, but just as i was about to head home the clouds briefly parted and the scene just lit up. I'm still in love with you is by one of Sue's favourites , Al Green.
Welch ein Sonnenaufgang am 13. Mai, die Eisheiligen merkt man so langsam. Die Temperaturen fallen gegen Wochenende hin. Trotzdem allen ein schönes Wochenende.
Alternating layers of claystone and sanstone are visible along the trail that leads from the The Gooseberry Badlands overlook near Gooseberry Creek, Wyoming. This overlook lies along WY 431 and provides a glimpse of the badlands formations common in Early Eocene Willwood formation of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. The Willwood, famous for its mammalian fossils, consists of a series of cyclic fluvial (stream/river) and floodplain deposits. In the badlands some sanstones form ribbon-like thin channels which are interpreted as avulsion channels or splays. Such channels can be seen at different levels from the center to the right of the photo. The intervening beeds are red to tan claystones interpreted as flood plain deposits. The red beds are the represent paleo soil profiles or paleosols. There are some thicker fluvial sandstones, like the one on top of the pillar just left of center in the photo, which represent the trunk or main stream channels. Present day intermittent, ephemeral streams have eroded these sediments into fanciful hoodoos, pillars; castles; small arches and fluted walls often capped by one of the ribbon or thicker fluvial sands as seen here. A 1.5 mile nature trails winds into the badlands formations from the overlook giving hikers a glimpse into the rugged terrain that covers much of the central Bighorn Basin.

I became enamored with Lobelia long before redicovering Ruth Bancroft Garden. Although the first time I came upon this beauty, three hummingbirds were vigorously feeding from bushes that had hundreds of flowers, and I found then in Washington state. I still womdered about the ID since these are mostly southwest and Mexican and couther Texas plants. But it was confirmed by the local nursery that reminded me in today's world, plants have many more ways to be spread than what was in the 1964 book I was using.
Lobelia laxiflora is a species of flowering plant in the family Campanulaceae. It is native to the Americas, where it is distributed in South, Central, and North America as far north as Arizona in the United States. It is known by several English-language common names, including Mexican lobelia, Sierra Madre lobelia, Mexican cardinalflower, looseflowers lobelia, and drooping lobelia. In Spanish and Nahuatl it is known as aretitos, acaxóchitl, and chilpanxóchitl.
In general, this is a perennial herb, subshrub, or shrub usually growing up to about 1.5 meters in maximum height, but known to reach 3 meters. The leaves vary in shape, size, and texture. The inflorescence is a raceme up to 40 centimeters long bearing leaflike bracts and several flowers. The flower may be over 6 centimeters long including its tubular base and corolla with narrow, spreading lobes. It is usually red, sometimes yellowish. The anthers protrude from the corolla. The plant produces seeds and also spreads via underground runners. Usually, and this is just a personal observation, when a plant spread via runners, it is often classified as invasive. But to me, plants are invasive if they are allowed to invade large areas. If it can be controlled in a garden, that is a different story. Besides, do nurseries actually see invasive plants? (Or, if they don't, why could I buy Scotch Broom which took over my "back 40" in two years? It took me two summers to get rid of it: it attracted as many beeds as privets.
My hubby signed me up for a quilting class at the Royal Botanical Garden’s as a Mother’s Day gift back in 2003. Sadly, the next day I got news from my niece that my mother died on this day (June 7th) I was making this quilt, it is hanging in my bedroom, and every time I look at it I remember my mother. ❤❤

This cottage in our village made me think of a cake (It doesn't take much to make me think of cake!) The Horizontal lines reminded me of the layers you see when you cut a cake..... it's even got frosting on the top!

After spending the night in Beatty, we stopped by Rhyolite ghost town on our way back into Death Valley. I think this was JP and Jenni's first time here.
Rhyolite is a fun stop, but it has become rather well known, and can be a tad crowded. This building is the old railroad depot. It's private property and fenced. I've never beed inside.
In one corner of the property, someone had mutilated the fence enough to just poke your camera through. There were some power lines in the shot, which I removed in Photoshop. Processing was done in Lightroom.
If you are interested in reading about Rhyolite, check out the Wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyolite,_Nevada
These water beads look clear to my eye but in macro mode they are far from perfect.

Herb Robert
I've decided that the little herb robert growing next to my pond is a "British Wild Flower" not a weed and therefore I don't need to get rid of it and have something to photograph.
I was experimenting yesterday afternoon. I don't have a dedicated macro lens so I've beed using Raynox macro attachments and extension tubes, both of whih have their advantages and disadvantages. This shot was actually taken with both, I used a short extension tube and the lower diopter Raynox (DCR 150). I actually think it worked very well, the combination gave me a longer focal distance than the extension tubes but the magnification was good and the DoF was actualy quite manageable.
More experimentation required!

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the largest charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, as well as on some inland waterways.
RNLI crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives since 1824 but we’re more than a rescue service.
The RNLI shops are run by volunteers, and all profits help save lives at sea. We rely on volunteers to keep the shops open.
Therefore, opening times may be subject to change. If you're planning a special trip, please phone ahead.
Coming and going here and there,
all over the place
the mind shops around for a taste
and touch of this Winter's haste
Snow falls again and again,
heavier by the hour
till my city view is no more
just those ghostly Oaks, and apparitions galore!
Fingers turn to thumbs going rapidly numb
to stay or not is no longer a choice
each step takes me deeper into a Winter whereabouts
where days come full circle quelling any dizzying doubts
That colder days are truly upon us
passing the Blackbird's idiom for annoyance
at my very presence beside his table
of Hawthorn hedgerow and Oaken gable
Tracks now covered in the throes of a Norfolk blizzard
that meteorological phenomenon with free reign
milking the landscape for all it's worth
this the cream of the skies and Winter's rebirth
Already drifts mount in the lacinate fields,
adolescent flakes brush the face with innocence
yet touching down with complete mastery of the art
the nucivorous ones will need to busy themselves at tomorrow's start
As light fades the ivybanks become teatime gateaux
with thoughts a wondering while cold bites my hunger
it's now sub-zero as the Norfolksy begin the drive
headlights upon the horizon as gritters revive
Their beed slides out of the city high streets
a pearl snake of delayed spending now put on ice
slipping as one through Nature's dispensation
unveiling a spirit of surprisingly kindred revelation
The Blackbird again offers an amusing diatribe
this time taking flight without settling his bill
soon out of sight in the fight of snow, contesting land and sky
leaving Winter's custody to the upcoming weeks where snow may lie.
