Is it possible to tame a wasp? And is it possible to do it in about 20 minutes? If so, I've done it. Before the downpour today I noticed a wasp was loitering around in my garden for about an hour. I decided to put a drop of sugar water on a plant he was near and see what happened. He ended up staying on this plant long enough for my to set up all my macro gear and a silver reflector. I then proceeded to do a portrait style photo shoot of the wasp for the next hour or so. I'm probably very weird, but the whole thing was fascinating to me

View on black or in a larger size, please.

She looks quite sure of herself

Help me ID this species.

This is my best effort yet. I'm still working

on the perfect "Bee shot" what ever that may be.

Did this with a Canon Elph SD750 in Macro Mode,

No Photoshop applied this time

Photo taken using a contrast flash technique, and a 100mm Macro Lens.

This creature is made with a mix of vintage and new fabric. My new favorite color combo of pink and brown. He measures 12 inches across and 16 inches tall. Very friendly and happy maybe prone to slight bouts of depression but these will pass soon as spring is close.

The damn bug just wouldn't fly away even though I kept opening and closing the window which it was resting on. So I decided to take a shot of it to go along with its eventual gruesome death: wrapped in tissue and flushed down a toilet.

does honey suck?

i'm glad i didn't disturb this one while mowing the lawn during the summer.

… so work the honey-bees,

Creatures that by a rule in nature teach

The act of order to a peopled kingdom.

They have a king and officers of sorts;

Where some, like magistrates, correct at home,

Others, like merchants, venture trade abroad,

Others, like soldiers, armed in their stings,

Make boot upon the summer’s velvet buds,

Which pillage they with merry march bring home

To the tent-royal of their emperor;

Who, busied in his majesty, surveys

The singing masons building roofs of gold,

The civil citizens kneading up the honey,

The poor mechanic porters crowding in

Their heavy burdens at his narrow gate,

The sad-eyed justice, with his surly hum,

Delivering o’er to executors pale

The lazy yawning drone. I this infer,

That many things, having full reference

To one consent, may work contrariously:

As many arrows, loosed several ways,

Come to one mark; as many ways meet in one town;

As many fresh streams meet in one salt sea;

As many lines close in the dial’s centre;

So may a thousand actions, once afoot,

End in one purpose, and be all well borne

Without defeat.

Henry V, act 1, scene 2. I’m reading Anathem.

The Wikipedia entry on these little guys says they fight for dominance, display it in their coloring, and can switch castes as necessary.
