WESTERN SAHARA: FORGOTTEN CONFLICT

The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is a land divided by a thirty year old conflict. The United Nations says this is the longest and largest territorial conflict in the world.
El Batallón de Reconocimiento de Beduinos del Desierto (hebreo: הגדס”ר הבדואי, ‘Hagadsar Habedoui’) cuenta entre sus líneas principalmente con beduinos y además algunos árabes israelíes que no son beduinos, pero que tienen en común la lengua árabe. Estos soldados cumplen a la perfección con su papel, gracias a que se desenvuelven perfectamente en el desierto y en la región. El batallón ha participado en todos los conflictos importantes en la franja de Gaza. La admisión en esta unidad es totalmente voluntaria.

Some of us got invited in the afternoons for some strong and very sweet tea with Mama who boiled it on a pot in a small fire. I can remember her lighting herself a cigarette by picking up one of the embers with her bare leathery fingers. She taught me a bit of Arabic like etzbah for finger.

Faiz Rahman lebt als Beduine mit seinen fünf Kindern in Khirbet Zanuta, einem palästinensischen Dorf im Gouvernement Hebron im südlichen Westjordanland, 20 Kilometer südlich von der Stadt Hebron entfernt. Seine Frau ist Englischlehrerin. Die Familie wird von der Caritas unterstützt.
