If you've ever walked barefoot on dry sand in the early afternoon in mid-summer, you know how unbearably hot the sand can get. Black skimmers deal with this by simply kicking away the top layer of sand until they've reached a deeper, cooler level of sand to rest on. These "scrapes" are first made by adult skimmers as nests for their young, but the chicks will also kick out sand themselves as needed to stay cool. As seen in the photo above, this thermoregulatory maneuver is often continued as the chicks mature.
