A friend was just telling me how interesting it was to go back through a heap of negatives he'd shot of his everyday life 9 years earlier—uncovering themes and meanings he had not been aware of at the time.

I never kept a journal or anything; but I do have large swathes of my past recorded in photographs. I'm always grateful my dad got me into the habit of labeling and organizing my negatives well, so it usually doesn't take me long to dig out an image that floats up from memory like this one. Probably it was my friend Joan who took this.

It turned out, strangely enough, that disco was not the answer for me.
