Macro Mondays #Refreshments

Size of the slice: 3 x 3 cm / 1,18 x 1,18 inches

7DWF: Anything Goes

For me, there is hardly a more refreshing summertime snack - apart from watermelon cubes - than cucumber slices, slightly peppered, salted, seasoned to your liking - or just plain... or in a salad (and cucumber and watermelon and tomatoes are a great salad team, too!). Especially now, when the small, super tasty, locally grown ones are available. The only one thing I've never done, yet, is to put them on my eyes ;-) Did you know that both melons and cucumbers are curcurbits? They are part of the gourd family, "a plant family consisting of about 965 species in around 95 genera" (Wikipedia). Just like squash, pumpkins, zucchini, even Luffa (or loofah), which is used as a sponge. The Spreewald region in Eastern Germany is

famous for its pickled cucumbers aka gherkins. Last but not least, my paternal grandmother used to make her own pickled cucmbers, they were salty and sour, and I loved them (still do, but they are not as good as the ones my grandmother made).

Technicalities: Small slice of cucumber, diameter as stated above, on a scratched glass table, lit from below, camera handheld. The slice was about 7 mm / 0,275591 thick. I used a very bright LED lamp to light it from below, and the distance between table and lamp was really short, so the light was rather glaring. I figured a thicker slice would be better. Processed in my usual order, first enhancements via PS in Viveza which I applied to the slice only: No brightening this time, I even decreased the contrast a little, and enhanced the structure of the slice. Then, in (on?) a new Viveza layer, I increased contrast and structure for the background only, which I've also darkened quite considerably. Next step were "Local Adjustments" in ON1 Photo RAW: I increased the vibrance, details, and added a slight green tinting (as the slice was a little on the yellow side due to the bright backlight) to the slice only. Back to PS, where I added the thin green frame and my signature.

I realise that this would have made a nice Star Trek story, too ("Captain, there is an unexplained round object blocking our vessel's path!" "Uhura, get Spock!"), but since I've already stretched your patience with my previous upload...

Keep fresh, or cosy, depending on whether it's summer or winter for you right now, dear Flickr friends! A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!

Autumn (and people) at the lake

Another one from my recent visit to beautiful Lake Tegel. When I took the photo, I thought that the guy standing by the boat was taking photos of the glistening autumn lake, but when I zoomed in I saw that he was actually taking a selfie in front of the boat. Well, what did I expect ;) Maybe this was his boat, maybe it was a boat he'd like to own, or maybe just a boat he wanted to show off with. The sunlight on that day had been so strong that the guy actually seemed to merge with it; to me it looks as if he had just emerged from Scotty's transporter beam ;)

Processing infos: This is an HDR made of a three image exposure bracketing, images were combined in HDR Efex Pro. The 7-14 mm is said to be quite prone to flares and also not to handle strong light sources too well, and since I was shooting almost directly into the sun I was curious (and not too confident) about the result. But to my surprise neither were the flaries too overpowering (I actually quite like those purple "spectres"), nor did the sun(star) look that bad at all.

Fun upload for Tuesday, since this image doesn't really fit into any "day themed" groups such as Window Wednesday, Monochrome Thursday, or Fence Friday; Sliders Sunday maybe, but I didn't want to wait until next Sunday ;)

Have a beautiful rest of the week, dear Flickr friends!

Macro Mondays #InsideElectronics

7DWF: Anything Goes

Height of the frame: 5,4 cm / 2,1 inches

In the year 2112, Starship Cygnus X-1, Rush category, the flagship of the X-Cans fleet, silently orbits planet Samba on an Amazing Journey through the Musical Fidelity Universe. It is on a five-year mission to explore new musical worlds, to seek out new sounds no woman or man has ever heard before...

The subject was a rather "simple" one, because the only easily accessible "Inside Electronics" parts I had were these old tubes that used to be inside of my headphone amplifier. They are made of glass (of course) so you can see what's inside of them; making it a "double peek", if you like - an inside view of something that used to be inside of an electronic device ;-). I always wanted to use these tubes for a photo. The idea was to make it appear like a spaceship. Ever since the new tubes were installed, the amplifier sounds crappy (so I don't use it anymore; but it's 20 years old, so it's probably time for a new one...). I wasn't aware that the type of tubes can make such a difference in sound...

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!

Das Universum der Musik... Unendliche Weiten.

Beam me up, Scotty is a catch phrase that made its way into pop culture from the science fiction television series Star Trek. It comes from the command Captain Kirk gives his transporter chief, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, when he needs to transport back to the ship.

Photo taken deep in the forest of the nature reserve the Naarden Eng situated on the shores of the Gooimeerlake. It is located near the city of Naarden - The Netherlands.

Robbie has been sitting behind prison bars for a damn long time. His sister's liberation attempt has unfortunately failed (as you may recall). Well, there are others in jail – and meanwhile Robbie has a best buddy: Jack Plug. He looks a bit strange – he has incredibly long teeth and no nose (this is due to a nasty accident). Anyway, they got really big buddies with a bottle of Jim Beam (a birthday present from Jack's girlfriend Jane, smuggled in). They were pretty drunk at the end, due to the prolonged abstinence from alcohol (no wonder) have giggled a lot, bawled songs and knocked proverbs. Among other things, "Beam me up Scotty" (quote from Star Trek). The idea was born! They would use Jack Plug's "natural" power-conducting abilities to free themselves from jail by simply beaming out ;-) Anyway, they want to plan that in detail when they are not drunk anymore ...

This picture has a prehistory. If you are curious, please look here:

Robbie sitzt schon verdammt lange hinter Gittern. Unter anderem "Beam me up Scotty" (Zitat Star Trek, Raumschiff Enterprise).

"Beam me up, Scotty" is a catchphrase that made its way into popular culture from the science fiction television series Star Trek. It comes from the command Captain Kirk gives his chief engineer, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, when he needs to be transported back to the Starship Enterprise. Whether this has ever been said that is much discussed …

"Beam me up" is an expression used when getting drunk off of Jim Beam, referring to Star Trek. When one says "Beam me up", they usually intend to get drunk to the point that they may as well actually be "beamed up" – and trying to carry out a real conversation with them would be almost impossible.

Although Menorca is a small island with a modest population, centuries of invasion and continental influence have left the island with a rich heritage. For visitors seeking a little culture, Menorca has plenty to offer...like Fortaleza de la Mola. This truly enormous 19th century fort lies on the opposite side of Mahon harbour. Comfortable walking shoes are required as part of the trip includes walking on uneven stone ground. Totally two hours is needed to walk around the fortress. This huge architectural marvel was completed after 25 years in 1875 and built by the Spanish to protect the Mahon port against resumed British or French incursions in the Mediterranean. Yet by that point the fort was already obsolete in its weaponry. The architectural jewel is the galleria amb espitlleres- a long series of perfectly aligned arches perfections in stone that might be more expected in cathedral leading to 45 cells. Although you can visit on your own, I recommend the guided visit, which really helps bring La Mola's distinguishing characteristics to life.

We were out in the Calhan area and stopped at the Paint Mines for a few shots.

The Paint Mines history: Archaeological studies indicate that humans have inhabitated the the Paint Mines for nearly 9,000 years. The plants, animals, and colorful clays encourged prehistoric people to return to the area year after year for centuries. The Paint Mines are considered significant in the prehistory of the area, and this park is listed as an Archaeological District in the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout the history of The Paint Mines, people are known to have visited the area to gather the colorful clays, tinged with red, orange, yellow, purple, and gray hues, to produce ceramics. (info taken from the park brochure)

Just posting this to keep everyone on their toes (myself included) in terms of what I post.

I am not sure my brain ever really turns off when it comes to seeing pictures, be I at a gorgeous waterfall or standing on top of the parking garage at the airport (where I found this shot enjoying a dusky evening)

I really enjoy the airport. I love going there, especially when it means I am departing for some other corner of the world. I love coming back to it too, because it means I am freshly arriving home, and Portland is a place I love coming home to, no matter how amazing where I have been was.

So whenever I go to the airport, I always keep a camera handy. I am a bit nervous about walking around and blatantly taking photos because of the post-9/11 induced paranoia. But nonetheless airports are such interesting places to shoot. For that matter, so are parking garages. As seen here. But this extends to most of the parking garages I have visited. I think mainly because we never think of going to the tops of them. Next time you are wandering around downtown (regardless of the city you live in) take the elevator briefly to the top of a nearby parking garage. I think you will be surprised by the view you find up there. I know I was the first time I started exploring the tops of the parking garages in downtown Portland. Whole new vistas were suddenly uncovered. And I could have smacked my forehead as I had never thought about these views previous to seeing another photographer's photos of Portland taken from parking garages.

Shrugging. Anyway, thought this one was interesting, so here you go. ;-)

This sunray pointed right at a grave in front of me. What happened? I don´t know... But when I die - please beam me up ;-)

This is for My Utopia because its nice to think about getting to another place when you are dead ;o)
