On 22nd February 1944 an 8 year old Tony Foulds was playing in Endcliffe Park, Sheffield, when the heavily damaged American USAAF B17 Flying Fortress bomber "Mi Amigo" started circling overhead. The pilot aimed for an emergency landing in the park to avoid the nearby houses, but spotting Tony and his friends playing in the park he waved to the boys and then crashed the plane into the trees on the hillside killing all 10 crewmen. Lt John Kriegshauser, the pilot, received a posthumous US Distinguished Flying Cross for his courage in sacrificing the crew rather than hit children playing in the park.
Tony has carried this guilt all of his life and he attends the memorial daily to keep it clean and tidy and to tell the story of the brave airmen. BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker recently met Tony, raised awareness of his story, and has took it upon himself to organise a memorial event which took place on Friday 22nd February 2019 (broadcast live on BBC Breakfast) where there was an amazing flypast by the US Air Force and the RAF for Tony and the American airmen who lost their lives.
