MH434 - Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX

The Heinkel He 111, a German twin-engined medium bomber, was used extensively in the late 1930s and early years of the Second World War. Like many Luftwaffe military aircraft, its pre-war development was concealed by claiming it was for high-speed commercial transport.

The Junkers Ju 87 or Stuka (from Sturzkampfflugzeug, "dive bomber") was a German dive-bomber and ground-attack aircraft. The Ju 87 made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 and served in Axis forces in World War II (1939-1945). It was instantly recognizable with its inverted gull wings, fixed spatted undercarriage and infamous Jericho-Trompete ("Jericho Trumpet") wailing siren, a psychological weapon used to terrify ground troops. The Stuka's design included several innovative features.

Worldwide only 2 Stuka’s survived. This one is displayed in the RAF-Museum London, the other one in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

More than any other aircraft, the Spitfire has become a much-loved symbol of winning against the odds. Its speed, agility and firepower made it one of the RAF's leading fighter aircraft of the Second World War.

Next to the Spitfire you can see part of the Hawker Hurricane.

During the Battle of Britain Hurricanes were more numerous than Spitfires and shot down over 60% of all German aircraft destroyed.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 E5 was the Luftwaffe's principal fighter aircraft during the Battle of Britain. It could outclimb and outgun the RAF's Hurricanes and Spitfires. However, its limited range allowed pilots only 20 minutes flying time during raids over south-east England.

The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight’s Supermarine Spitfire MK356 was built at Castle Bromwich and delivered to Digby in March 1944. MK356 is now painted to represent Spitfire Mk IXC EN152 ‘QJ-3’ of No 92 Squadron in Tunisia in 1943. In its desert camouflage scheme, MK356 commemorates the hard-fought and ultimately successful war in the North African desert, and honours the heroic pilots and stoic ground crews of the Desert Air Force.

The final scene of the film "Battle of Britain" (1969), with Laurence Olivier playing Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding. The scene was shot at this portico, and the sky Dowding was looking at was the sky over London where the battle was raging. The location is Bentley Priory in Stanmore (north of London), the then headquarters of the Royal Airforce Fighter Command. Fuji X-Pro1.

Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the commencement of The Battle of Britain. We should never forget the few who sacrificed so much to protect our island from invasion. They gave the best that they had under increasingly pressing circumstances - lest we forget.

The other day I heard the unmistakable sound of a Merlin engine, rushed outdoors and saw the equally unmistakable silhouette of a Spitfire. Today I decided to visit my local airport and, to my amazement and delight, a Spitfire had its engine running…
