Die Bergkirche in Beucha bei Leipzig steht auf einem Felsen oberhalb eines ehemaligen Steinbruchs, der sich mit klarem Wasser gefüllt hat. Aus diesem Steinbruch kommt ein Teil der Steine für das Leipziger Völkerschlachtdenkmal.
The mountain church in Beucha near Leipzig stands on a rock above a former quarry that has filled with clear water. Some of the stones for the Leipzig Battle of the Nations Monument come from this quarry.
A big bull elk in Rocky Mountain National Park, associating with two other bulls. The divots in his fur, evident on both flanks, may be battle scars. One of the other bulls had the tines broken off his antlers, while the third bull appeared unscathed.
The antlers will drop off soon, and new antlers will start growing in spring. These guys have some time to get back in shape and to think about battle strategy.

After a monumental screw up that could have been easily prevented a week earlier, another opportunity presented itself on the shot. After waiting in town for three and a half hours, a short Y102 returns back north with only a couple cars through Holly, MI past the very charming Battle Alley.
Pride leaders pay a heavy price for their position as is evident from this battle-scarred warrior. I watched an older lion, too weak to join the food fest after a kill, still play a dominant role when it came time to bring down a big bull buffalo. It still went out to challenge another younger and stronger looking male encroaching on the pride’s turf. The photographer part of me wanted to photograph a fight but my tender side wanted the pride leader to live to fight another day. There’s nothing like lions to bring out emotions. Centipedes have a rounded or flattened head, bearing a pair of antennae at the forward margin. They have a pair of elongated mandibles, and two pairs of maxillae. The first pair of maxillae form the lower lip, and bear short palps. The first pair of limbs stretch forward from the body over the mouth. Bull getting a little beat up from fighting off the competition in eastern Washington. He also had some blood on his left hind quarter. I think he was the winner because there was a cow near by.
A trio of BNSF SD70MACs assist a westbound loaded grain train over Bozeman Pass at O'Rea Creek Road.
Since the BNSF takeover, the MRL blue helpers have disappeared from Bozeman pass, being replaced by two sets of three BNSF SD70MACs. This was arguably the more photogenic set as the other set consisted of three dirty and worn H2 SD70MACs. Either way, it was nice to see EMDs in helper service over the pass.
I think more than the street is closed. I guess the building has some utility as there are a number of cellular antennae at the high point. Thanks for looking at it.

Well truth be told, I don't have any fictitious figures lying around the house. I looked just about everywhere and nothing. My friend Helen is hosting the Macro Mondays group this week so I wanted to come up with something for the theme. I decided it was time to widen the search, my son Daniel happened to be home so it was time to see what he had. Well Daniel has all kinds of fictitious action figures that come as models and he assembles. Both my son's grew up in the war gaming world, my one son designs them for a living and Daniel enjoys putting them together. I chose Unicorn, a derivation of the original Gundam, a little warrior ready for battle. I'm good with that and that's the extent of my knowledge so please no questions. I will add you're looking at 1.5 inches from the tip of his helmet wing thing to the bottom of the red marking on the shield he's holding. Shot with one light off to the left and some fairy lights in the back, for my good bokeh friends, sorry no bubbles from the Voigtlander...

A pair of young Elephant Seal bulls practice their battle skills in advance of the breeding season at Año Nuevo State Preserve. Beginning in December the main herd starts to arrive including the humongous alpha males who will do battle for the right to breed. On this day there were a few hundred seals on the beach. By January there will be up to 10,000 seals who come here to mate, to molt, and to give birth.
The likelihood of these two young bulls mating with a female is quite remote. In order to climb the breeding ladder, they would need to win many battles against alpha males weighing in the excess of 2500 lbs. But who knows, the need to breed is strong in these beautiful animals. You can witness the breeding season in full swing on docent led tours, just don't get too close. You may end up in some alpha male's harem.

Battle River Railway's two ex CN SD40-2W's haul four tank cars eastward on the ex. CN Alliance Subdivision. The crew is taking full advantage of track speed after interchanging cars at Camrose, much to the chagrin of the two photographers trying to get ahead of the train!
Another Lightroom HDR which turned out quite grainy this time. So decided to use it to my advantage to show off the wonderful soft light that fell through the open windows. This had to be in black and white, the colour was too washed out. Still, I'm very happy with this, maybe needed a spectral figure to be at the far wall :)
A CSX freight grinds up Cumberland mountain miles from anywhere. These deep rock cuts were the former Nashville Chattanooga and Saint Louis Railroad's answer to the foreboding rock formations that lined the east slope of Cumberland Mountain near Cowan, TN. CSX battles the escarpment northbound and southbound with manned helper engines on the rear of most trains. With 39 loads on the headpin this Tullahoma, TN, bound local needed the assistance of the Cowan helper up the grueling hill from Sherwood at the bottom of the hill. For ten minutes you could hear them battle the hill, and it quickly became deafening as the train entered the massive cut. A few minutes later they'd crest the grade, pass through the summit tunnel, and be descending the mountain grade. Right behind this train was a Q210 with empty auto carriers making an unassisted run at the hill. This is one of the coolest places I've ever been....

Out today with ianbartlett for a just under 11 mile circular walk from Catsfield, via Crowhurst to Battle and back.
Up until our coffee break at Crowhurst church, the weather was lovely ... blue sky and sunshine. But at Crowhurst we watched the rain clouds come over and for the next hour and half we walked in heavy rain, and got drenched.
Lunch was in Battle and from there back the Catsfield, the rain eased off, but the wind got up, which dried us out.
I didn't take many photos, but thought this view of Christmas condoms would do, as they'll soon be removed and Battle will return to normal.
