To me, Batteries are little metal things that I have to buy to make my best toys work - most importantly, my camera.
They can be dangerous things if they leak their acid out.
They can be expensive, they can be inexpensive, but they are absolutely necessary.
All in all, I (for one) need plenty of them in my life.
All change at Athlone
In the centre of Ireland, the town bus service has become the first in the country to go all electric with its new fleet of fully electric single deckers for the town's bus service in January 2023.
Launched at the end of January 2023, a fleet of new Alexander Dennis/ BYD enviro200EV operated by Bus Eireann, 11 of these EA class operate routes A1 & A2.
During the initial set up, some of the former Wrightbus streetlite WM class were retained while teething problems were ironed out with the new technology.
These single-deck battery-electric buses, EA class are 12m long with two doorways, bespoke design features, wheelchair ramps, usb charging & coloured priority seating, with up to 73 passengers on 27 fixed seats, six tip-up seats within a permanent wheelchair space and dedicated accommodation for a pram, pushchair or buggy.
The Athlone town service operates with two routes ( A1 & A2 ) from Bealnamulla via Athlone bus & rail station, beyond to Creggan every 15 minutes.

I would love to say that I had a quirky, witty picture to honour and celebrate this very special day of February 29th. I haven't.
Instead we've got a story of some of the day's activity, though it's largely been centred around mock exams.
In between exams I asked Dave to do some soldering for me. There were two jobs, the second of which may hopefully feature in due course.
The first, and main event, was to replace the battery in Laura's toothbrush.
We've got matching his and hers Oral B Triumph 9000 toothbrushes which Laura's cousin (a dentist) very kindly got us as a wedding gift. You can tell we didn't buy them as we rarely go top of the line on anything!
They feature the scourge of modern electronics - the non-replaceable battery.
Why do they do it? It's hard to say. Rechargeable batteries of any stripe are consumable items, whether it's the lead acid one in your car, the NiMH in your torch or the Li-ion in your mobile phone.
For mobile phones it's easy to see the benefits to manufacturers. Most contracts on more expensive handsets run over two years. The life of a typical mobile battery is about two years. I won't say it was Apple who pioneered the concept of making sure that your battery life tails off just as your contract comes up for renewal to ensure that you update your otherwise perfectly satisfactory hardware, but I'm not saying it wasn't. ;)
Of course, non-replaceable is a load of tosh really. There are really no devices that are capable of being dismantled for repair that can't have their battery replaced, and I'll probably be changing the one in my phone when it gets to two years old later this year.
Back to the toothbrushes though...I'm surprised at Braun. These are ninety quid toothbrushes, and they're suitably well engineered. It feels like they'll outlive me, but at five years old the batteries are starting to get very tired.
Do Braun think that anyone prepared to drop ninety quid on a toothbrush will be happy to do the same again five years later? Maybe they do. Maybe they're largely right. Me on the other hand...I'm much happier to pay four quid on Amazon for the replacement battery and have a toothbrush that works like new again.

When Mike got his shiny Playstation 4 for Christmas he gifted me one of his PS3s as I've never actually in my life owned a games console.
The PS3 is a very polished beast, and a worthy addition to any living room. Unfortunately they use a wireless remote with a lithium ion battery, and my battery is knackered.
This necessitated a replacement from Ebay, but they're not a trivial swap.
After much fiddling though I got mine sorted. All good. :)
Another of Winchester's regular traders, Darshan and his little tent is in the market, no matter what the weather, and he can whip a new battery into a watch very quickly while you wait, at a lot less cost than some of the watch shops, he's also very good at fixing phones!

An additional note:- My watch strap broke in town this morning (01/09/.17), the local watch repair place in the High Street wanted Ā£23:00 to replace the plain brown leather strap, Darshan fitted one almost identical to the original for Ā£6:00 in less than 10 minutes!

I'm sure you all vividly remember the time back in 2016 when I roped Dave and his soldering in to replace the non-replaceable batteries in my toothbrush.
Four years on and the time has come again. They're getting a bit lethargic and only holding charge for a day or two, so it's time for a shot in the arm. Let's hope the battery status on this one looks a little healthier when it's charged!

The battery sign will come up on the Suunto Stinger display when the battery needs replacing. Last time I replaced it was 2 years ago and some 200 dives ago and so far that's been the going rare for replacement.

and all the other places I've dived. These are the sandgrains and rust (?) buildup under the screwdown bezel. You should get some 70% Isopropyl alcohol to clean the glass. I didn't have any this time, but handcleaned and buffed the sapphire glass.
Update 2018: This Stinger is still going strong. Twice yearly battery upgrades.
