LELYSTAD - Batavia yard enjoys wide international fame by the reconstruction of the VOC ship Batavia at the end of the 1990s. The golden age and the great role that the Dutch shipping has played in it, still such a small 400 years later speaks to the imagination.
Replica (1:1) of a medieval ship. Sailed to Australia and back. Everything is build like it was a few hundred years ago.
This was taken last Saturday when Chicagoland was having a variety of different kinds of weather. Snowing like crazy one minute & then the sun was shining. This was one of the clouds that produced some very heavy snow showers heading east. I was leaving Fermilab after attending WGN Tom Skilling's annual weather seminar (which was very interesting, as it always is).

Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East Company (VOC). It was built in Amsterdam in 1628.
A twentieth-century replica of the ship is also called "The Batavia" and can be visited in Lelystad (The Netherlands.)
Although I digitally superimposed the elements of this composition, this evident artificiality more clearly depicts the image I envisioned when visiting Batavia City, which is an outlet center near Lelystad in the Netherlands. The storefronts of the park are loosely based on historical fishermen’s houses and also the high stone wall surrounding the complex is a nostalgic reference to the past. Putting all elements together in a perfect symmetry, including the cloud above, the graphic clarity of it all gets a surreal level of tidiness which is maybe even more truthful to the reality of Batavia City.

The CSX unit honoring law enforcement leads train Q-017 at Batavia, NY on July 3, 2021. I only go to the CSX main about 5 or 6 times a year, and usually because some heritage unit or something special is coming. On this day I was after CP 7013 in the maroon heritage paint leading K-634. This just happened to come by while I was waiting. The K-634 got delayed, and I finally caught it later in the day about 40 miles East at CP359 in Perinton.

Batavia was once known as "Windmill City"
For anyone fascinated with the history of windmills, a visit to Batavia, Illinois might be in mind. Along their river walk, visitors can see several variations of windmills, many built right there in the city. At one time, Batavia had six windmill companies that produced hundreds of windmills each year.
Windmills were in production from 1863-1951. These companies included the U.S. Wind Engine Pump Company, Challenge Company, Benjamin Danforth, Batavia Wind Mill Company, Appleton Manufacturing Company and Snow Manufacturing Company manufactured windmills thus the name Windmill City stuck. Three of the buildings that produced windmills are still operational the U.S. Wind Engine Pump Company and the Challenge Wind Mill and Feed Mill Company. These are now in use as offices or for commercial business while the Appleton Manufacturing Company is now home of the Batavia Government Center.
As part of the bringing windmills back to Batavia sponsored by the Batavia Historical Society, today visitors can view 18 windmills including 15 that were built in Batavia including a rare Pearl Steel model that was produced by the Batavia Wind Mill company. For visitors that want to see several windmills at one time, many are located at the Batavia Riverwalk including a two Challenge OKs, Challenge Dandy, Pearl Steel, Challenge 27, Challenge Steel Appleton Goodhue Power 4, Challenge Vaneless Model 1913 and the U.S. Halladay Vaneless.

In the colder regions funerals often had to wait until warmer weather before graves could be dug so the deceased would be placed in holding vaults. This is the backside of what I believe is the holding vault in the Batavia New York cemetery. This cemetery opened in 1823 and contains over 8,000 graves, mostly from the 19th century. In 2002 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's all very dark and Gothic looking and the trees are very large keeping everything well shaded and dark looking. I have relatives here.
