The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 29th of July is “different shades of green”. If you follow my photostream, or observe some of my entries for colour themes for “Looking Close on Friday” you might imagine that I would choose pieces from my Playmobil collection. However, as I have done that before, I found inspiration elsewhere. In my dining room, which is also where I keep my laptop, I have a beautiful French Art Deco china cabinet full of Carlton Ware from the 1920s and 1930s. My top shelf consists of “Rouge Royale” Carlton Ware, and the second shelf consists of “Vert Royale” Carlton Ware, and that is where I took my inspiration from for this week’s theme.

I love and collect many different kinds of porcelain, so it didn’t take me long to gather just a small selection of green coloured pieces in different shades. I hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.

The pieces in the front row from left to right are: a Carlton Ware 1920s gilt eau-de-nil jug and bowl, a Wedgwood Jasperware thimble of “The Spinner” in sage green and a salt and pepper and milk jug in may green from the “Wild Rose” cottage ware series produced by Carlton Ware in the 1930s.

The pieces in the second row from left to right are: a small bottle green Victorian transferware posy vase (one of a pair), an ornamental Victorian transferware spill vase in graded shades of green and two pieces of gilt jade green “Vert Royale” Carlton Ware vases from the 1930s.

At the back: a Carlton Ware 1920s gilt eau-de-nil bon-bon dish.

Arezzo, Toscana

Arezzo, Tuscany.

Detail of the Arezzo Cathedral pulpit, a masterpiece dating back to the 1560s. The precious marbles used for this pulpit come from Arezzo's Duomo Vecchio, which stood outside the city walls on what is now the Pionta Hill. A 'fortified' cathedral because it was the residence of the bishops of Arezzo until the 12th century. The Duomo Vecchio was destroyed by the Florentines to prevent any enemies of Arezzo from using it in the event of a siege of the city.

The door, named "Porta del Paradiso" by Michelangelo, faces the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. It was made by Lorenzo Ghiberti between 1425 and 1452, with an important collaboration of his son Vittore. The door is subdivided into ten large squares, arranged in five rows, each of which, with frames adorned with rosettes with prophet heads, occupies the entire width of a door leaf. The panels show scenes from the Old Testament.

One of the bas-reliefs of Banteay Srei (the citadel of women). It is one of the most beautiful and elaborately decorated of all the temples and is about 30 kms NE of Siem Reap. This is my favorite temple of all the complexes around Angkor Wat.

Work on the Confederation Building began when the cornerstone[1] was laid by the Governor General on July 1, 1927 as part of the celebrations of Canada's Diamond Jubilee and it opened during 1931. 140

The Descent of the Ganges

The Descent of the Ganges (also called Arjuna's Penance) is a bas-relief dating from the seventh century, probably the largest in the world.

The sculptures that cover the entire surface of two huge rocks, 27 meters long (89 ft) and 9 meters (30 ft) high, depicts the course of the Ganges from heaven and the Himalayas as described in the Panchatantra.

“The colour of my soul is iron-grey and sad bats wheel about the steeple of my dreams.” ~ Claude Debussy

Many years ago we joined our friends from Iceland and traveled for three week through Italy. I was walking down the street, filling my brain with all the vibrant images and sounds of Florence, when I looked to my right. This image of a bat was created just under a window...putting it at eye level.

Silently I gave thanks to the artist that created the bat and thanked my lucky stars that I was in Italy! Che bellezza c'è in Italia! Amo questo posto!

93-99 Pratt St

A century-old downtown Hartford retail-office building with the potential for conversion to apartments straddling the corner of Pratt and Trumbull streets is for sale at $2.9 million, brokers say.

Trumbull Towers Management owns the six-story, approximately 100,000-square-foot edifice on about a half-acre at 93-99 Pratt St. and is representing itself in sale talks, according to the building leasing broker Amodio & Co. Real Estate.

Built in 1910, the property is comprised of two interconnected buildings whose tenants include Caribbean bar-restaurant The Russell and Max Bibo’s On Trumbull St. delicatessen.

A true open-air museum, Rome has preserved and enriched its beauty over the centuries. Each corner of the streets reveals a treasure, be it ancient, religious, architectural or even gastronomic. All roads lead to Rome, and one should not resist, simply take it and go, enjoy the beauty and admire the eternal city.

The Norman porch of Malmesbury Abbey survived amazingly well. It depicts the Christian salvation history.

The corner stone of the former Masonic Temple at 199-203 Ann Street in Hartford was laid on September 22, 1894. The completed building was first opened for lodge meetings in September, 1895 and the building was officially dedicated on July 14, 1896. Displaying a variety of Masonic symbols, it was designed by architect Brooks M. Lincoln of Hartford (1852-1898). No longer used as a Masonic hall, the building was converted into offices in 1982 and its original stained glass windows have been replaced with clear glas
