Following my first view of the work of Jean Michel Basquiat at The Albertina in Vienna this past October, I traveled to the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal where the exhibit, "Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music" was being shown. This collage piece reflects the influences that jazz musicians, such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, had on Basquiat's art.

Jazz wasn't his only musical influence. Others depicted in the exhibit include punk, hip hop, opera, classical and Mississippi blues.

(Wiki)

The glass building takes on the appearance of a sailboat with sails inflated by the west wind, thus giving the illusion of movement. Twelve translucent glass veils envelop the "iceberg", a succession of organic white shapes dressed in ductal concrete.

"Jean-Michel Basquiat ([basˈkja] * 22 December 1960 in New York City; † 12 August 1988 ibid.) was an American artist, painter and sketcher. He was the first African American artist to make a breakthrough in the mainly white art world." de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Michel_Basquiat

He "rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. [...] Since Basquiat's death at the age of 27 from a heroin overdose in 1988, his work has steadily increased in value. In 2017, Untitled, a 1982 painting depicting a black skull with red and yellow rivulets, sold for a record-breaking $110.5 million, becoming one of the most expensive paintings ever purchased." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Michel_Basquiat

New Colorful Mural of Basquiat and Andy Warhol by Eduardo Kobra in Brooklyn, New York City. (7/25/2015)

The two phenomenal artistic comets of the 1980s contemporary art scene in New York City are brought together in this mural. Largely discovered by Andy Warhol, both Keith Haring (1958-1990) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) quickly shone like supernovae until their lives were ended by illness and drugs.

The Haring reference is particularly apt, as not far from here in 1984, the New York artist himself painted a mural in his iconic style. Sadly, it was damaged by vandals recently. [Those feral humans who understand nothing of value - veritable oxygen thieves of which there are far too many around these days.]

"In his 1982 diptych Untitled (Pollo Frito), Basquiat created a key work that established a link between the rough life and dangers of the streets of New York, his "Studio of the Street" of the years 1980/81, and the subsequent work phase. Like warning signs in public space, he writes DANGER and BROKEN GLASS in the wet acrylic paint on the right side of the picture. Underneath a monumental head on the left panel of the painting, he scratches ASBESTOS into the black paint deeply enough to make flashes of the bright orange of the primer shine through - a reference to the highly heat-resistant and superbly insulating, but carcinogenic material, whose hazardousness was very much present in US media in the year the painting was created. The asbestos products manufactorer Johns Manville Corporation was forced to file for bankruptcy due to the victims' liability claims. The clash of gestural-painterly and figurative elements, letters and words as opposed to running acrylic paint and sprayed-on lines leads to a dynamized pictorialness, a web of markings and meanings, a mirror of vibrant downtown Manhattan and its art scene." Basquiat was guided here by the expressiveness of comic books to depict police violence. "He depicts the protagonist as a comic figure with a tumuscent bump towering on his head, who asks himself amid BOOM and BANG: WO BIN ICH [WHERE AM I]? The fact that Baquiat writes these words on the canvas in German could be an indication of the business relationship established in 1982 with the Swiss art dealer and collecor Bruno Bischofberger, who remained his gallerist until Basquiat's death." Street artist Kobra's mural based on the Michael Halsband photo of Andy Warhol and Basquiat

Untitled. In the winter of 1985 I was coat checking at Barbetta's on Restaurant Row on West 46th Street. Lots of celebrities would come in especially after the theatre with all their entourages. I met a lot of cool people that winter. One night a handsome, young black man with hair going in all directions, came in with 6 or 8 people, all of whom left coats with me. The restaurant staff were quite excited this young man was in the restaurant. I had no idea who he was. When they retrieved their coats from me, this charming young man handed me a $20 and so I asked him what change he would like. He said, "oh none. That is for you." It was the largest single tip I ever received coat checking. Later I learned his name was Basquiat and he was an artist!

This painting went to auction at Sotheby's Auction House in 2017 and sold for $110.5 million to a private collector. I hope wherever his soul landed, he's still doing art and making more money than he ever could have imagined. Maybe he's with Andy!

The Artist Jenny Leonard was inspired by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement.

His colourful bold work and the fact that things are out of proportion gave Jenny the chance to layer up the paint and go a bit wild on the sculpture.

Last friday, the 28th, was my son's b-day... Liam turned 8 years old and sometimes I cannot believe it. This piece was done today, for him, and with him by my side... The kid has some bright future ahead ... his favorite artist is Basquiat and, hence, his dream is to live in NYC... Happy B-Day Liam boy! You make it all worthwhile for me...

It is a collaborative work that combines elements of both artists' styles. The painting features a male head with a closed mouth, surrounded by the words and symbols characteristic of Basquiat's graffiti style. Warhol's influence is evident in the use of bright colors and bold lines.

ah se tivessem sido reacionários com Jean Michel Basquiat...

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 – 1988) was an American artist. He gained popularity first as a graffiti artist in New York City, and then as a 1980s-era Neo-expressionist artist. Basquiat's paintings continue to influence modern-day artists and command high prices.

Based on Michael Halsband's photo of Andy Warhol and Basquiat this mural is the work of artist Eduardo Kobra
