Bristol Flyers vs Manchester Giants, British Basketball League (BBL) game on Friday 23rd September 2022, at SGS WISE Arena, New Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, during the 2022-23 season.

About the photographs.

Bristol Flyers’ Corey Samuels, in navy blue jersey and shorts, wearing number 4 on the back, is seen here attempting to block and take the ball from Manchester Giants’ Rahmon Fletcher, in white kit, number 23.

The next photo shows Fletcher attempting to get around and dribble past Samuels, whom had to move out of the way to ensure he does not commit a personal foul.

Samuels was born in his hometown of Bristol, while Fletcher was born in Kansas City, in American.

Those photographs were taken during one of the opening games of the 2022-23 season of the British Basketball League Championship, on Friday 23rd September 2022.

On this day, Bristol Flyers were the home team, while Manchester Giants was the visiting team. I bought two courtside tickets, for myself and my best friend.

In the first half of the match, Flyers were behind by about 20 points, but in the second half, they made up for it. The final outcome at end of the game was

Flyers 79 – 78 Giants.

About the teams.

The Bristol Flyers was formed in 2006 by a merger of two former Bristol based teams, the Filton Flyers and the Bristol Academy, to become known as Bristol Academy Flyers. They started in the English Basketball League, in Division 2, and one year later, they moved up to Division 1.

By 2013, they got financial backing from the owner of Bristol City football club. As part of the deal, they moved into the top level franchise based BBL, for the 2014-15 season, that was when they became known simply as Bristol Flyers. Their highest finish in BBL was 4th place during the 2021-22 season.

The current Manchester Giants, not to be confused with the original Manchester Giants from 1975 to 2001, was formed in 2011. Graham Herstell put together a plan for a new Manchester based basketball team, and revived the Giants brand.

The Giants started in the top level professional BBL with the 2012-13 season. As of from 2020 to present, they are based at the National Basketball Performance Centre, located in the Belle Vue area of Manchester, which they share with the Manchester Mystics, a women’s team in the WBBL.

About the photographs.

This is the opening match of the British Basketball League Championship 2022-23 Season. Manchester Giants was the visiting team, playing away against Bristol Flyers at their home arena in Bristol.

I bought two courtside tickets, and brought along my best friend. It had been some years since I last watched a real live basketball match, the first since 2017. After being a single parent for too long, I needed to restart and refresh my photography skills.

In this photograph: This is one of the Manchester Giants players, I haven’t been able to work out who he is as his jersey number is hidden. He is walking the length of the basketball court as part of the warming up, and here, he is seen checking the countdown time on the clock on the wall behind me. The clock would show how much time is remaining before the start of the match.

In the first half of the match, Flyers were behind while Giants was ahead by about 20 points. The final outcome at end of game was Flyers 79 - 78 Giants.

Bristol Flyers vs London Lions, British Basketball League (BBL) game on Sunday 2nd April 2023, at SGS WISE Arena, New Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, during the 2022-23 season.

About the photographs.

V.J. King wearing jersey number 17 and in control of the ball, playing for Bristol Flyers, is seen dribbling the ball and coming to a stop, when he was momently blocked by Olumiye Oni of London Lions, wearing white jersey with number 13 on it.

King was born on 22nd January 1997 in Cleveland, Ohio, US, while Oni was born on 4th April 1997 in Porter Ranch, California, US. Information is according to a website I found on the Internet.

The game went on to end with Flyers 87 – 82 Lions.

Their highest finish in BBL was 4th place during the 2021-22 season.

London Lions actually started out as Hemel Hempstead Laker in 1977, and changed their name to Hemel Royals before moving to Watford, and finally moved to Milton Keynes.

They became known as Milton Keynes Lions, and that was when their performance improved, including winning the BBL Cup during the 2007-08 season.

By 2012, due to losing their home arena in Milton Keynes, they were relocated to London, thus renamed as the London Lions.

Cardiff Met Archers vs Nottingham Wildcats, Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) game on Saturday 14th October 2017. Game was played at the Archers Arena, Cardiff Metropolitan University, in Cardiff, Wales (Cyrmu), United Kingdom, during the 2017-18 season.

About the photograph.

This is the American born Alyesha Lovett playing for Nottingham Wildcats, taking a free throw and shooting for the hoop.

Most of the Cardiff Met Archers players are seen having a quick chat, likely to be talking about their game plan, in the background and their faces partial hidden by the glass backboard.

To the right of the photo, is the Cardiff Met Archers player number 6, British born Stefanie “Stef” Collins, watching Lovett doing the shooting.

Stef Collins went on to become the head coach of Archers in the 2020s.

This shot was taken with a 28-200mm lens having a maximum of f 3.8, and from the seating on an upper level. The view of the basketball court is partial blocked by the backboard at one end of the court.

At that time, the arena did not have strong bright indoor lights, unlike the newly redeveloped arena as seen in my photos of the 2022-23 season, so I had to make do with low light levels, even when pushing the ISO speed to the camera’s maximum.

The reason why my later photos looked better is because I used a fast 50mm lens, shot from courtside, in brighter lights.

The game ended with Archers 73 – 78 Wildcats.

About the photograph.

This is the British born Brahe Ashton playing for Nottingham Wildcats, on the attack, running and dribbling.

Just to her right side is the American born, Cardiff Met Archers player Abigail Yunker watching Ashton.

Special thanks to the members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the game from courtside.

I had been taking the photos with a 50mm lens, as it was the only lens, I have that is fast enough. The 28-200mm would have limited aperture which would have given me slow shutter speed. I spent the whole game going up and down the sidelines, looking for best possible shots.

At the end of the game, the score was Archers 69 – 75 Wildcats.

Cardiff Met Archers vs Nottingham Wildcats, Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) match on Saturday 21st January 2023. Game played at the Archers Arena, Cardiff Metropolitan University, in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, during the 2022-23 season.

About the photographs.

In additional to the basketball players and the action being more important, it does not tell a full story about basketball. I figure to try to take some shots of the officials, because they’re also important to the game as well as the players.

Those photos were shot in colour, but I figure to turn them into black and white for a bit of “journalism style” feel to the pictures.

In the first one (0858): This was taken when the ball was out of play, and the players were having a one-minute time out for a quick discussions about their plans.

That moment was taken just after the end of the time out, and when the players were heading back into the court, to take up their positions.

This official went and took up his position near the courtside, and I decided to attempt to frame the shot and took it.

In the second one (0882): Here, the official is in action, watching the players.

He is watching Nottingham Wildcats’ Kayla Shaw, the one holding the ball, attempting to pass Cardiff Met Archers’ Lauren Saiki, whom was blocking Shaw.

The name Molten on the back of the official’s shirt, is the name of the company that manufacture the basketballs, and are sponsorship of the officials at British top professional basketball levels.

Many special thanks to members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the game from courtside.

About the photograph.

The Cardiff Met Archers player Lara Habling could be seen just behind the Wildcats player wearing jersey number 30, just to the left of the photo.

She is the one who attempted to shoot the ball from her position there, at the basket and hope for a 3 points shoot. You’ll notice the official holding up three of his fingers to signal an attempt for 3 points.

However the attempt failed, the ball bounced off the backboard, and is on a rebound.

Here we have Nottingham Wildcats player Kayla Shaw (closer to camera) watching the ball, and hoping to catch it.

I thought to change this shot into black and white in Adobe Lightroom for a dramatic effect.

With special thanks to the members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the game from courtside.

I had been taking the photos with a 50mm f1.8 lens, as it was only fast enough than the 28-200mm lens I have, for the indoor shots. I was allowed to go up and down the sidelines, as long as I don’t get too close to the playing field.

This is British born, Nottingham Wildcats player Brahe Ashton wearing jersey number 1, attempting to block, but careful not to comment a foul, the opposite player.

The opposite is the American born Abigail Yunker playing for Cardiff Met Archers, wearing jersey number 2.

In the photo, Yunker is attempting to find an opening, to pass to any of her teammates, but she was unable to do so, and decided to move to her right, and get around Ashton.

About the teams.

The Wales based Cardiff Met Archers started in 1999, as a university basketball team. They have about 19 different teams, range from Under-10s to Seniors, and men’s teams as well as women’s teams.

The women’s senior team (seen here in the photograph) is the only team in a top-level elite franchise-based league. They joined the Women’s British Basketball League when it was first set up in 2014, and to date, are still in the WBBL.

Bristol Flyers vs Manchester Giants, British Basketball League (BBL) game on Friday 23rd September 2022, at SGS WISE Arena, New Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, during the 2022-23 season.

About the photographs.

The British born Leslee Smith is the Flyers player in the navy blue jersey and shorts, attempting to score a point by jumping up and dunk the ball.

The Giants player in the white outfit attempting to the block the ball, could be the American born William Lee. For some reason, the Giants players names and the assigned shirt numbers is bit mixed up.

Lee did successfully deflect the ball, stopping it from going into the hoop, but Smith then catches it, and attempts to pass onto a team mate.

In the first half of the match, Flyers were behind by about 20 points, but in the second half, they made up for it. The final outcome at end of the game was

Flyers 79 – 78 Giants.

On this day, Bristol Flyers were the home team, while Manchester Giants was the visiting team. I bought two courtside tickets, for myself and my best friend.

During the warm up and before the tip-off (basketball speak similar to football’s “kick-off” term), I took those photos of Cardiff Met Archers’ mascot.

I think the first photograph, file 0069, may have bad focusing. I spent years using manual focus camera, but haven’t used an Auto-Focus digital camera much during the years as a busy single parent, so I’m really rusty with AF settings and skills.

Point of note: I’ve no idea who is in this dragon outfit, I never thought to ask.

Malvern, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom. Date unknow, c1986 to c1989.

About this photograph.

During my late teenager years, while attending college studying graphic design, with an on-the-job work experience training for a professional photographer, in my spare time, I joined a local basketball club in my hometown.

Usually we would be training, learning how to do basketball, and often have friendly games. Sometimes once in a while, the club have a fixture game with other local teams. A few of us, myself included, are not members of the team, so often we would sit out on the sideline and watch the games.

Then one day, as I was aware of when the next local fixture was due, I decided to bring my Minolta X-700 35mm film camera and 50mm lens with me, as I decided I wanted to try and do basketball photography.

My preferred black and white film is always the Ilford brand. I can’t be sure if I used the FP4 or HP5 for this photo, as it was taken like over 30 years ago, and I lost all my notes.

Up until this point, I had shot landscape, still life, people who posed for camera, parked vehicles, and many nearly stationary subjects. This was my first time shooting fast sports action, so it was a new experience for me.

It is possible I could have shot those photos with Ilford FP4, which is rated for ISO 125/22° and because of this, ended up using lower shutter speed, hence they all had blurry movements.

I developed and printed the photographs myself while at college. It is possible that I could have done this at a rented darkroom under a café. I can’t be sure where did I do the darkroom work.

In 2021, the photographs were scanned to my computer using a Brother multifunction printer/copier/scanner/fax machine, for uploading to my Flickr account.

I don’t remember where exactly this was taken, I think it was at Dyson Perrins school, in Malvern. At that time, I didn’t drive, so I often walked half hour from home to get there.

You are welcome to comment on my photos, but do NOT use canned comments, which are pre-prepared comment codes that talks more about the groups than my photos. Those will be deleted. My photos are NOT adverting spaces on billboards for the groups.

About the photograph.

This is the Manchester Giants player Nick Lewis, in the white kit, attempting to block the Bristol Flyers player Jelani Watson-Gayle, in the navy blue shirt and shorts.

Lewis was born in Canada, and I think according to a different website, he has a dual nationality of Canada-British, and was born in March 1993.

Watson-Gayle is British, born in London, in September 1998, and joined Flyers for the 2022-23 season.

Seen in the middle and in the background is the Cardiff Met Archers player, Abigail Yunker in control of the ball, and attempting to dibble past, but two of the Oakland Wolves players (wearing white jersey and shorts) made their move towards her in the hope of blocking her.

Yunker had decided to pass the ball to her teammate Mara Marchizotti wearing jersey number 15, seen on the left side of the photo.

Yunker was born on 26th September 1998 in Whitehouse, Ohio in the United States.

About the photograph.

This is the British basketball game between Worcester Wolves, the home team playing at their sports arena, against Plymouth Raiders.

The game was played at the University of Worcester, St John’s Campus, in Worcester, England, United Kingdom. That was before the team moved to the University of Worcester Arena on Hylton Road.

My camera’s white balance was incorrectly set up with the wrong settings, resulting in an orange tint for all the photos. About the photographs.

In the photograph, there is a Bristol Flyers player in control of the ball, hidden from view, and right in front of Malcolm Delpeche wearing jersey number 22. Sadly, I have not been able to identify who the player is.

Worcester Wolves vs Plymouth Raiders, British Basketball League (BBL) match on Friday 29th March 2013, at University of Worcester, St John’s Sports Centre, during the 2012-13 season.

About the photographs.

This photograph was taken during the 2012-13 British Basketball League Championship season. Worcester Wolves were playing at home, at their old University of Worcester, St John’s Sports Centre.

Plymouth Raiders were the visiting team coming up to Worcester.

At that time of the match on that day, Raiders had won 19 out of their 29 games, and are in third spot on the Championship table, while Wolves were in 6th place on the table, with 17 wins and 12 loses. Both of the teams were hoping for a top four finish in the Championship table, in the final two weeks of the season.

The outcome was Worcester Wolves 89 – 69 Plymouth Raiders.

At the end of the 2012-13 BBL Championship season, Plymouth Raiders were championship with 30 wins out of 33 plays. Worcester Wolves were in 5th place with 20 wins.

My camera’s white balance was incorrectly set up with the wrong settings, resulting in an orange tint for all the photos. Few years later I upgraded my computer with Windows 7, thus able to download and install Adobe Lightroom Classic CC. Those selected photos displayed in my Photostream had the colour balance corrected in Lightroom before exporting and uploading to Flickr.

About the teams.

Worcester Wolves was formed in May 2000 and played in the lower levels of the National Basketball League (England) from 2000 to 2006, at their old St John’s Sports Centre.

At the end of the 2005-06 season, Wolves was invited to join the BBL, a top level franchise based elite league, starting with the 2006-07 season. In 2013, they moved to the new University of Worcester Arena on Hylton Road.

In June of 2021, Wolves withdrew from BBL and are now back in the NBL.

Plymouth Raiders was formed in 1983, and played in the English Basketball League (that would later be renamed as National Basketball League), at their home arena which was the Mayflower Centre until 1996.

In 1996, they moved to the Plymouth Pavilions, an entertainment and sports complex in Plymouth.

Starting with the 2004-05 season, Raiders played in the top level BBL until the franchise folded in July 2021 due to the increased costs of renting the Plymouth Pavilions. Their last season with BBL was the 2020-21 season.

The Raiders name was bought in an auction by the previous co-owner, so a new Plymouth basketball team was created and are called Plymouth City Patriots.
