Three greylag geese in tight formation above the Ismaninger Speichersee, east basin.
The Ismaninger Speichersee is a reservoir in the north of Munich, built in 1929 to regulate the water flow for the run-of-the-river power plants along the Isar Canal.
The reservoir and the adjacent fish ponds are a nature reserve (Europareservat) and an Important Bird Area (IBA).

This is an autumn view of the basin at the foot of the Lower Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Boats can be rented to cross the basin, gaining access to trails and to the base of the falls.
The aroma of pine, cedar and hemlock permeated the crisp air, and the sound of rushing water was mesmerizing.

... as seen from Cable Bridge. The area around Cardiff Docks was once referred to as Bae Teigr - Tiger Bay - because of how rough a neighbourhood it was supposed to be. By the time of the First World War, Cardiff Docks were moving nearly 10 million tons of coal per year from the Welsh mines to the rest of Britain and the world. These peaceful new developments are less than 20 years old, part of the complete redesign of Cardiff Bay at the turn of the Century. How times have changed...

We've had a gray winter here in Nova Scotia. Uplifting to see blue sky and it's reflection on the Annapolis Basin
Badwater Basin is an endorheic basin in Death Valley National Park, Death Valley, Inyo County, California, noted as the lowest point in North America, with a depth of 282 ft (86 m) below sea level.
At the edge of the basin, where water is not always present at the surface, repeated freeze–thaw and evaporation cycles gradually push the thin salt crust into hexagonal honeycomb shapes.
We are just back from Death Valley, will share more images in the coming days.
Have a great weekend! Thanks for stopping by and for all of your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.

On the Tuesday after Labor Day 2022, the Columbia Basin ran a turn from Warden north to serve customers in the Wheeler area. The CBRW has an impressive fleet of SD9's in this attractive red, black, and white scheme. The 651 leading this train was previously on the MRL and EJ&E. They were working pretty good with this train coming up a short grade in the Atwood area about halfway between Warden and Wheeler.
I arrived in American Basin in the afternoon of August 31, and hiked comfortably in shorts and a T shirt. But the wind was rising as the sun set, and I was awakened in my tent at midnight by strong winds blowing snow.
In the morning, I headed back to a small pond that I had visited the previous afternoon, hoping it would look like this. The first snow turned from a deep disappointment to an opportunity. My tripod was at about 11,300 feet and the highest peak on the horizon reaches 13,806 feet.
In Colorado, it can snow in the high mountains on any day of the year.

Came in early from the park one evening and decided to take a drive out the Chief Joseph Highway outside of Cooke City, which is also known as Sunlight Basin. Besides being a beautiful drive, it's also a popular spot to see a variety of wildlife, including moose, bear, and bighorn sheep. We didn't come across anything other than deer along our drive but sure enjoyed the views along the way. It rained much of the time, but the clouds parted just long enough to let a little sunshine through on this scene.
Happy Hump Day!!!
A boardwalk (with low fencing) leads over small pools of water to the salt flats which cover almost 200 square miles. Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level. The Panamint Range rises several miles in the distance with Telescope Peak at 11,049 elevation.
Happy Fence Friday!
The Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest geyser basin in the park and is located near the northwest edge of Yellowstone Caldera near Norris Junction and on the intersection of three major faults. The Norris-Mammoth Corridor is a fault that runs from Norris north through Mammoth to the Gardiner, Montana, area. The Hebgen Lake fault runs from northwest of West Yellowstone, Montana, to Norris. This fault experienced an earthquake in 1959 that measured 7.4 on the Richter scale (sources vary on exact magnitude between 7.1 and 7.8; see 1959 Yellowstone earthquake). Norris Geyser Basin is so hot and dynamic because these two faults intersect with the ring fracture zone that resulted from the creation of the Yellowstone Caldera of 640,000 years ago.

There are actually nine geyser basins within Yellowstone National Park and over 10000 thermal features. This picture was taken at the Lower Geyser Basin and shows the colors that are present in some of the thermal features. Pretty, if you can stand the smell of sulfur. I admit to gagging my way through much of the terrain.
