This building, also on the Krakow Market Square, is more-or-less contemporaneous with the Cloth Hall of the previous photo, and like it has evolved in form over the centuries. The church dates to the thirteenth century and was basically destroyed along with the rest of Krakow by a Mongol invasion in 1241 (as were Wroclaw, Lublin and Sandomierz, three other cities we visited).

The church was rebuilt in gothic style. It has two towers of uneven height, the taller of which acted as a watchtower. Tradition holds that a guard on the tower played a trumpet to warn of the approach of the Mongols, but was cut off mid-song by an arrow to the throat. Today a trumpet is still played hourly from the tower to commemorate the event, and like the original, it stops abruptly mid-performance.

Many chapels and other elements were added to the church over the centuries. The alterpiece dates to the 15th century and some of the stained glass to the 14th. Much of the colorful interior design you see here is quite new, from the 19th century. And the work continues.... Much of the exterior was covered in scaffolds when we were there, so I didn't bother with exterior photos. St. Mary's Basilica, Krakow.

The Estrela Basilica (Portuguese: Basílica da Estrela) is a basilica built by order of Queen Mary I of Portugal, as a fulfilled promise for giving birth to a son (José, Prince of Brazil). Construction started in 1779 and the basilica was finished in 1790, after the death of José caused by smallpox in 1788.

The huge church has a giant dome, and is located in a hill in what was at the time the western part of Lisbon and can be viewed from far away. The style is late baroque and neoclassical. The front has two twin bell towers and includes statues of saints and some alegoric figures. (Wikipedia)

Another view of the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, a large unfinished Roman Catholic basilica in Barcelona, Spain. Walk around the block here and there's different views each step of the way. Originally designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926). At the time of his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete... some of the project's greatest challenges remain, including the construction of ten more spires, each symbolising an important Biblical figure in the New Testament. It is anticipated that the building can be completed by 2026, the centenary of Gaudí's death. > en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagrada_Fam%C3%ADlia

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington KY

The Roman Catholic St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky, is a minor basilica in the United States. Construction of the cathedral began under the Diocese of Covington's third bishop, Camillus Paul Maes, in 1895 to replace an 1834 frame church that was inadequate for the growing congregation. Pope Pius XII elevated the cathedral to the rank of minor basilica December 8, 1953.

locally known as “Yerebatan Sarayi” which means underground palace, the cistern is one of Istanbul's most unexpected attractions. It is a underground reservoir, part of a complicated system that once brought drinking water into Istanbul from the south-east Balkans. Constructed in the sixth century and then forgotten for centuries, the cistern that once stored the water is now fitted with lights and wooden walkways. The Basilica of Saint Mary was America's first basilica. The groundbreaking was in 1907; It was established as a minor basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1926, making it the first basilica in the United States.

The Basilica of San Lorenzo in Genoa is a Gothic masterpiece, clearly recognisable by its façade of alternating bands of white and black marble, typical of medieval Ligurian architecture.

The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, or simply Saint Peter's Basilica, is a church built in the Renaissance style located in Vatican City, the papal enclave that is within the city of Rome. It was initially planned by Pope Nicholas V and then Pope Julius II to replace the aging Old St. Peter's Basilica, which was built in the 4th century by Roman emperor Constantine the Great. Construction of the present basilica began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626.

Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and the largest church in the world by interior measure. While it is neither the mother church of the Catholic Church nor the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome (these equivalent titles being held by the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome), St. Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic shrines. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom."

Catholic tradition holds that the basilica is the burial site of Saint Peter, chief among Jesus's apostles and also the first Bishop of Rome (Pope). Saint Peter's tomb is supposedly directly below the high altar of the basilica, also known as the Altar of the Confession. For this reason, many popes have been interred at St. Peter's since the Early Christian period.

St. Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage and for its liturgical functions. The pope presides at a number of liturgies throughout the year both within the basilica or the adjoining St. Peter's Square; these liturgies draw audiences numbering from 15,000 to over 80,000 people. St. Peter's has many historical associations, with the Early Christian Church, the Papacy, the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-reformation and numerous artists, especially Michelangelo. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age. St. Peter's is one of the four churches in the world that hold the rank of major basilica, all four of which are in Rome. Contrary to popular misconception, it is not a cathedral because it is not the seat of a bishop; the cathedra of the pope as Bishop of Rome is at Saint John Lateran.

The most glorious building in the sanctuary is the Basilica of Santa Maria la Real de Covadonga. Standing on a hill it is visible long before you reach the sanctuary. Its rosy appearance comes from the pink marble excavated from the mountains of Covadonga. The first drafts for the basilica were made by Roberto Frassinelli, a versatile German erudite, but the plans were finished by Frederico Aparici. Construction started in 1877, and the inauguration took place in 1901.
