Symphony In Yellow
I wish all my friends relatives in India a very Happy New Year.
New Year in India is celebrated with different names in different states :
In Kerela it’s called Vishu
In Tamil Nadu it’s called Puthandu
In Punjab it’s called Baisakhi
In West Bengal it’s called Poila Boishak or Nobo barsha .
About Poila Boishak (Bengali New Year 1417) in West Bengal :
In Bengal the new year is now 1417 (according to Bengal calender).
Naba Barasha or Poila Baisakh is the traditional Hindu New Year in West Bengal and Bangladesh. It is celebrated in the month of Vaishakh or Baisakh (April – May). In 2010, the date of Naba Barsha or Poila Baisakhis April 15. The New Year is popularly referred as Naba Barsa or Nava Varsha in Bengal and Pohela or Poila Baisakh in Bangladesh. It is the first day in the traditional Hindu Bengali Calendar.
In Bengali houses, Naba Barsa is welcomed with elaborate alpanas (rangolis). A kalash is placed in the center of the alpana pattern and it symbolizes prosperity. Houses are elaborately decorated with flowers as there is no shortage of flowers during this season. Another important event is the Prabhat Pheries or early morning processions.
Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Ganesh are worshipped on the Bengali New Year day.
Traders perform the halkhata ceremony that marks the advent of the Bengali New Year. All shops are decorated with flowers and one will notice stringed fresh lemons and chillies hanging in front of shops. This is used to ward off the evil eye.
Shopkeepers, businessmen and traders close the old accounts and open a new one. People visit their favorite shop during the day to wish them luck for the year ahead. Traders welcome customers on this day with sweets.
Women make it a point to buy a new sari or saree for Poila Baisakh, especially a white sari with red border. Traders popularly call the sale of new clothes during Naba Barsha as ‘Chaitra Sales’ – the previous month is Chiatra or Chaitro.
No Hindu festival is complete without the mouthwatering cuisines. And Bengalis prepare both Vegetarian and non-Vegetarian dishes for Poila Baisakh.
About The shot:
I wanted to picture of flowers during the sunset time, so captured the bokeh of beautiful Daisy’s in my garden in natural light.
Enjoy … !!!!
I would highly appreciate, if constructive criticisms are given for improvement.

One more month for Vishu..
Vishu (Malayalam:വിഷു) is a new year festival celebrated in the state of Kerala, India. It is similar to the New Year festivals observed elsewhere in India like Baisakhi (Punjab), Bihu (Assam), Naba Barsha (Bengal), Bisu (Tulu Nadu region in Karnataka), (Vishuva Sankranti) in Orissa and Puthandu (Tamil Nadu). Vishu generally falls on April 14 of the Gregorian calendar. This occasion signifies the Sun's transit to the zodiac - Mesha Raasi (first zodiac sign) as per Indian astrological calculations and astronomically represents the vernal equinox. "Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal". Therefore Vishu is more probably denoting one of the equinox days. Although Vishu (first of Medam) is the astrological new year day of Kerala, the official Malayalam new year falls on the first month of Chingam (August - September). However, 1st of Chingam has no significance either astrologically or astronomically. Chingam is the harvest season in Kerala and southern parts of coastal Karnataka.
Wishing all my friends a happy Vishu in advance .. !!

St Bishoy (Pishoy) 320-417, was born in village of Shansa in the Egyptian governorate of al-Minufiyah. The youngest of six brothers, he was weak and frail. His mother saw an angel in a vision asking her to give God one of her children, and pointed to Bishoy. When the mother tried to offer one of her stronger children, the angel insisted that Bishoy was the chosen one. Bishoy went to the wilderness of Scetes when he was 20 years old and became a monk living the life of an ascetic becoming a disciple of St Macarius. Later, Bishoy was guided by an angel to the site of the present Monastery of Saint Bishoy, which he founded but continued to live the life of a hermit. Bishoy's asceticism was harsh to the extent of tying his hair and hands with a rope to the ceiling of his cell, in order to resist sleeping during his night prayers. This asceticism made him so famous that he was visited by Ephrem the Syrian. After the Monastery was invaded in 407/8 by the Mazices tribe, Bishoy left for the mountain of Ansena. While there, he built the monastery of Saint Bishoy at Deir al-Barsha, which still stands near Mallawi. His relics are housed at the Monastery of St Bishoy in Wadi Natrun.

Wishing all my flickr friends all around the globe a very Happy Bengali New - Year 1420..
2013 Bengali New Year, Pohela Boishakh
Mesha Sankranti is celebrated as Naba Barsha or Pohela Boishakh in West Bengal. Pohela Boishakh is the first day of the Bengali Calendar. Hence Pohela Boishakh is also known as Bengali New Year. Bengali New Year is celebrated in West Bengal and among Bengali communities in Assam and Tripura.
In Assam, Pohela Boishakh is celebrated as Bihu and also known as Assamese New Year.
King Shoshangko of ancient Bengal is credited with starting the Bengali era. The starting point of the Bengali era is estimated to be in 594 in the Gregorian calendar. Hence Bengali year is 594 less than the Gregorian calendar if it is before Pohela Boishakh or 593 less if it is after Pohela Boishakh.
Hence in Year 2013
Bengali Era before 15 April would be 1419 = 2013 – 594
Bengali Era after 15 April would be 1420 = 2013 - 593
