“Oh yes, it was my Venice! Beautiful,

With melancholy, ghostly beauty—old,

And sorrowful, and weary—yet so fair,

So like a queen still, with her royal robes,

Full of harmonious colour, rent and worn!”

Frauenkirche Dresden.... Built in the 18th century, the church was destroyed in the bombing of Dresden during World War II. The remaining ruins were left for 50 years as a war memorial, following decisions of local East German leaders. The church was rebuilt after the reunification of Germany, starting in 1994. The reconstruction of its exterior was completed in 2004, and the interior in 2005. The church was reconsecrated on 30 October 2005 with festive services lasting through the Protestant observance of Reformation Day on 31 October. The surrounding Neumarkt square with its many valuable baroque buildings was also reconstructed in 2004.

I just love the folds moving in the non-existent wind of this angel.

The angel is one of several decorating Ponte Sant'Angelo - the bridge was originally called Pons Aelius (Aelian Bridge) and built in 134 A.D. by emperor Hadrian to connect the city and his mausoleum, supposedly by the architect Demetrian. It was later also referred to as pons Sancti Petri (the bridge of St Peter) because pilgrims used it to get to the St Peter's basilica. And in the early 7th century it was given the official name of Sant'Angelo, to match the name-change of the mausoleum to Castel Sant'Angelo.

In the 15th century the bridge was used to display the bodies of executed criminals.

The angels now adorning the bridge were commissioned in 1669 by pope Clement IX and made by students of Bernini under his directions. This particular one, holding a column, was made by Antonio Raggi

Interior of the church Santa Maria Maddalena - a Baroque church, for the order Ministri degli Infirmi which had a church on this spot since 1586. The work on the current church was begun in the 17th century in the Baroque style (and the main main facade was actually finished in the 1730s in the Rococo style (after some 70 years of work on the church). Several architects were involved in this long process, and the dome is thought to be the work of Carlo Fontana.

Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England. Built 1705-1722 originally for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, as reward for military activities including the Battle of Blenheim. Birthplace in 1874 of Winston Churchill.

Christopher Wren was in the running to be architect but the post was given to John Vanbrugh who was assisted by Hawksmoor. The building is in the ‘English Baroque’ style that paralleled the perhaps more exuberant Continental Baroque. English baroque was soon unfashionable and replaced by the restraint of the Georgian buildings of Edinburgh and Bath.

Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, England and home to a branch of the Howards. Designed by John Vanbrugh assisted by Nicholas Hawksmoor in the then fashionable English Baroque style. Construction began in 1701.

It was Vanbrugh’s first major foray into architecture. He and the professional architect Hawksmoor were involved shortly after with the design of Blenheim Palace

A fire in 1940 destroyed much of the building including the dome. Part has since been restored.

The Castle of Nordkirchen is a baroque castle near Münster. Between 1703 and 1734 the old and original castle was rebuilt to this impressive castle as we know it today. The castle stands on a rectangular island and is surrounded by a moat-like canal. Because of it's shape and size it's also called the Versailles of Westphalia.

Baroque church of st. Walenty in Osieczna was built in years 1729-33. The creator of the project was Italian architect Pompeo Ferrari and the present interior of the church was made in the years 1784-86. It is part of the Franciscan monastery and is a sanctuary thanks to the image of Our Lady of Sorrows with Child, famous for its graces. An image is a very rare image type. It presents the Mother of God watching over the sleeping Jesus, who has a sense of future painful experiences. The painting is decorated with two papal crowns in 1979.

The Life of ,Man

Jan STEEN, 1665

Mauritshuis Museum, Hague, Neherlands

The curtain is lifted to give us a clear view of an inn, where young and old are enjoying eating, drinking, playing and flirting.

But for Jan Steen, it was not just about cheerful conviviality. His message is concealed in a small detail by the window. Up in the dark attic, a boy is blowing bubbles next to a skull. Although life is wonderful, eventually it will burst like a bubble.

The convent and church of Santa Clara, founded in 1596, located in the historic centre of Quito, stands out for its Baroque style. The church has no tower and the square cloister consists of arches resting on octagonal pillars.

This organ case in the Peterskirche (English: St. Peter's Church) in Vienna is by Gottfried Sonnholz and dates from 1751. It consists of 119 blind pipes, the actual present organ behind it was built in 1903 by Franz Josef Swoboda.

While I was taking these photos, an organist played Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. That just sounded wonderful! When he finished playing, the people sitting in the pews, about a dozen in number, applauded and I realised that I had walked around with my camera in the middle of a poorly attended organ concert. Of course, I applauded too.
