Ruth Handler, de oprichter van speelgoedmerk Mattel, werd geïnspireerd door de Duitse Bild Lilli pop bij het ontwikkelen van de Barbiepop. Ze wilde nl. graag een pop voor haar dochter creëren met het uiterlijk van een volwassen vrouw. Tot die tijd waren er alleen poppen met het uiterlijk van baby of kind. Barbie is vernoemd naar Ruth's dochter Barbara.

Voluit heet Barbie Barbara Millicent Roberts.

Op 9 maart 1959 werd de eerste Barbiepop geïntroduceerd op de Toy Fair in New York. Dat jaar werden al meer dan 350.000 exemplaren verkocht. Ook 65 jaar later is Barbie nog populair.

Ruth Handler, the founder of toy brand Mattel, was inspired by the German Bild Lilli doll when developing the Barbie doll. She wanted to create a doll for her daughter with the appearance of an adult woman. Until then, there were only dolls with the appearance of a baby or child. Barbie is named after Ruth's daughter Barbara.

Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.

On March 9, 1959, the first Barbie doll was introduced at the Toy Fair in New York. More than 350,000 copies were sold that year. Even 65 years later, Barbie is still popular.
