Red Baraat is a pioneering band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by dhol player Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound, a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra with elements of hip-hop, jazz and raw punk energy. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve.

But even as it’s clear that Red Baraat has built a startling history of performances in iconic settings, the band’s bread and butter remains the sweaty clubs, festivals, packed performing arts centers, and college auditoriums that keeps the band on the road all over the world the last several years. It’s here where Red Baraat does what it does best - communing with their audience in a joyful, near hedonistic celebration of music and dance which, tellingly, draws a crowd even more diverse than the players on stage.

The universality of what Red Baraat does is undeniable. And this is no happy accident. It is the product of intention and design.

The students, who had prepared their questions in advance, were particularly interested in knowing how the artists warm up. Sunny Jain, the band's founder and dhol player, described practicing in the dark so that he can focus on sound and feel. Speaking about the importance of practicing every day, he compared it to eating. "You can't avoid it all week and then practice for three hours on Sunday and think you're done. Just like eating, you can't stop eating all week and then eat nonstop for ten hours. It doesn’t work that way!"

Baraat is a bridegroom's wedding procession in North India. In North Indian communities, it is customary for the bridegroom to travel to the wedding venue (often the bride's house) on a mare, accompanied by his family members. The baraat can become a large procession, with its own band, dancers, and budget. The groom and his horse are covered in finery and do not usually take part in the dancing and singing.

In gujarati, we call it a jaan. This is the groom's procession to the wedding place. Nissan decided to come on a horse. He also shut down 14th street in Atlanta just for his procession.

way too under-aged to be playing his heart out for wedding crowd. The baraat was having a blast throwing money around, but I couldnt get myself see the bright side.

Most of my cousins and other relatives are in this photo. There are still a lot of people missing, because they could not make it to my cousin's wedding.

On June 23, 2016, Red Baraat performed a free concert on the Dartmouth Green. This Brooklyn-based band featured a dance-trance mix of North Indian bhangra with elements of jazz and rock.

Before the concert, World Music Percussion Ensemble director Hafiz Shabazz conducted a percussion petting zoo featuring hands-on exploration of dozens of instruments.

Red Baraat’s performance was the first of three free concerts and two family-friendly films in the second edition of our Free for All series. F4A is part of the Hop’s Community Venture Initiative designed to increase access to Hop programming in the Upper Valley.
