Bankruptcy blue, or what its now called "reborn blue" adorns GP38 4310 in a scene very reminiscent of the late 70s era Rock Island.

The Royal York Cresent at Clifton, the construction of the Georgian terrace was started in 1791,but due to bankruptcy of the promoter was brought to a standstill. In 1801 the unfinished part of the cresent was bought by the Government intended to build barracks. Local opposition frustrated this plan and the Crescent was completed in 1820 as originally planned.

The Rembrandt image I have chosen for this project is the one where he recorded facing his own total bankruptcy. I love that he dressed up and portrayed himself as a king.

These three are at the beginning stage. There are two weeks of painting work to be done on them yet, and the carapace (frame, exoskeleton) of the boards will be 24 carat gold leaf, including the electrical cord.

Located in the middle of Macau Peninsular at the northern foot of Guia Hill, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden (in Portuguese: Jardim Lou Lim Ieoc) covers an area of 1.78 hectares with scenic landscapes. This elegant garden was modeled after Suzhou Lion Grove Garden, one of the four most famous classic gardens in Suzhou, being the only one with Suzhou classical garden style in Macau. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was once named "Entertainment Garden" and hailed as one of three famous gardens of Macau many years ago. And in 1992, it was rated as one of Macau’s eights sights. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden is a great place for sightseeing as it has quaint moon gate, shady walkways, grotesque rocks of man-made hills, bamboo groves, towering banyan tress, winding corridors, elegant pavilions, spattering waterfalls, ponds with green lotus, etc. The waterside pavilion is the centerpiece of Lou Lim leoc Garden. Despite it is a traditional Chinese architecture, some western architectural elements are embedded in, such as the external wall painted in light yellow, the favorite color of Portuguese, gothic porticoes, white European-style carvings at the top of porticoes. The barrier close to the pond is painted red, China’s favorite color. This building reflects the fusion of oriental and western cultures.

It was initially a vegetable plot and was purchased by a Macau Turpan, whose son Lou Lim leoc spent a large sum of money to convert it into a private garden. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was the largest private garden in Macau. The construction started 1904 and took 21 years to finish. The garden was changed hand due to the Lu family’s bankruptcy, until it was purchased by Macau government in 1970s. After renovation it was opened to the public in 1974. At the turn of 21st century, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was famed as the show place of Cantonese opera. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of Chinese democratic revolution, once stayed in this garden to meet celebrities of China, Macau and Portugal, and revolutionists.

The Tornabuoni Chapel is the main chapel (or chancel) in the church of Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Italy. It is famous for the extensive and well-preserved fresco cycle on its walls, one of the most complete in the city, which was created by Domenico Ghirlandaio and his workshop between 1485 and 1490.

The main chapel of Santa Maria Novella was first frescoed in the mid-14th century by Andrea Orcagna. Remains of these paintings were found during restorations in the 1940s: these included, mostly in the vault, figures from the Old Testament. Some of these were detached and can be seen today in the Museum of the church.

By the late 15th century, Orcagna's frescoes were in poor condition. The Sassetti, a rich and powerful Florentine family who were the bankers of the Medici, had long held the right to decorate the main altar of the chapel, while the walls and the choir had been assigned to the Ricci family. However, the Ricci had never recovered from their bankruptcy in 1348, and so they arranged to sell their rights to the choir to the Sassetti. Francesco Sassetti wanted the new frescoes to portray stories of St. Francis of Assisi; however, the Dominicans, to whom Santa Maria Novella was entrusted, refused. Sassetti therefore moved the commission to the church of Santa Trinita, where Ghirlandaio executed one of his masterworks, the Sassetti Chapel. The rights to the chapel in Santa Maria Novella that were lost by the Sassetti were then sold by the Ricci to Giovanni Tornabuoni.

Ghirlandaio, who then had the largest workshop in Florence, did not lose the commission however, because on September 1, 1485 Giovanni Tornabuoni commissioned him to paint the main chapel, this time with the lives of the Virgin and St. John the Baptist, patron of Tornabuoni and of the city of Florence. It is possible that the new scenes followed the same pattern as Orcagna's.

Ghirlandaio worked to the frescoes from 1485 to 1490, with the collaboration of his workshop artists, who included his brothers Davide and Benedetto, his brother-in-law Sebastiano Mainardi and, probably, the young Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Structure of the cycle. In green: Stories of the Virgin. In red: Stories of St. John of the Baptist. In violet: Episodes of the Lives of Dominican Saints and the two patrons. In yellow: The Four Evangelists.

The windows were also executed according to Ghirlandaio's design. The complex was completed by an altarpiece portraying the Madonna del Latte in Glory with Angel and Saints, flanked by two panels with St. Catherine of Siena and St. Lawrence. On the recto a Resurrection of Christ was painted. This work is now held divided between the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin and the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

The cycle portrays on three walls the Life of the Virgin and the Life of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of Florence. The left and right walls each have three rows, each divided into two rectangular scenes framed by fictive architecture, and surmounted by a large lunette beneath the vault. Each side wall has a total of seven narrative scenes which are read beginning from the bottom.

The chancel wall has a large mullioned window of three lights with stained glass, provided in 1492 by Alessandro Agolanti after Ghirlandaio's design. On the lower part of the wall is a donor portrait of Giovanni Tornabuoni and his wife Francesca Pitti, while on either side of the window are four smaller scenes portraying Dominican saints. Above the window is another large lunette, containing the Coronation of the Virgin. In the vault are depicted the Four Evangelists.

The new "non-profit" Essentia Health building on the left was made to look like a big ship. I'm sure its well paid executives have nice offices.

Tilburg, 27 March 2017 - Once upon a time... In the beginning of 2010 LOCON Benelux was established as the Dutch branch of the Eastern-German railway undertaking LOCON A.G. The company was contracted by Attero in favor of previous operator DB Schenker for the the transport of household waste to the incineration plants of Wijster and Moerdijk (both situated in the Netherlands). In the following years many additional services were launched, such as various intermodal shuttles, the transportation of cars and coal and the supply of locomotives for holiday trains. For this operation LOCON Benelux used eight 1800 locomotives, acquired from NS (Dutch Railways). This fleet was expanded in the successful years with rental locomotives such as the Br 189 by Siemens and several G2000's and G1206's from Vossloh. In spite of the initial growth in traffic and apparent succes LOCON Benelux eventually failed. In 2016 the transport of waste was lost to road transport and after that the intermodal business became more and more in decay. In the beginning of 2017 most locomotives had become underutilized and were only seen for incidental spot transports. Meanwhile, the costs kept running. In July of 2017 the company had no choice but to file for bankruptcy. The once prosperous book of LOCON Benelux was therewith closed for once and for all.

On 27 March 2017 the dark clouds were already packing (albeit in this case only figuratively) above G1206 rental locomotive 1596 when it passed the suburb Tilburg Reeshof as train 47502 on its way with new Ford cars from Emmerich to Sloe.

A wig-wag dances in warning while the caboose train finishes boarding ahead of its departure. Rock Island 4506 is currently going around in C&NW drag as it would have in 1981 after the Rock shut down and it was sold to C&NW, remarked, and renumbered to 4160. I've seen lingering examples of these colors surviving on grain cars but to see it fresh is really stunning. August 10, 2024.

On what used to be my annual Christmas pilgrimage to Millinocket (aka the center of the universe) I would inquire if any trains would be running on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day. Often times there wasn't much going on, but sometimes I got lucky. Things on the Iron Roads Bangor & Aroostook System had gotten so bad that most of the power had gone back to the leasing companies. Units were purportedly repossessed as a result of the RR not paying their bills. Near the end, the bankruptcy trustee obtained a bunch of leased units from Locomotive Leasing Partners to keep the RR moving. On Christmas Eve, the northbound #212 (traditionally the train number for the road job between Millinocket and Madawaska) would make a round trip between Oakfield & Portage to work the saw mills along the way. My memory isn’t very good, but I think they may have been swapping trains in Portage with another job out of Madawaska at the time, although on this day they didn’t meet the other job. I arrived in Masardis to get my first shot and napped until I heard the train coming, when I got out to get my shot I looked over at the car and noticed that the front tire had slipped off the soft shoulder, resulting in one from wheel in the ditch and the opposite rear wheel in the air. This was the only time in my life that my car went off the road when it was parked and I wasn’t even in it! Needless to say the train crew got a big kick out of my situation. After getting dragged out of the ditch I headed for Portage where I walked into the chipper at the mill then operated by Georgia Pacific. By this time most of the once ubiquitous 40 wood chip cars had mostly disappeared although a few still remained. Two weeks later, at 0001 on January 9, 2003 after 111 years the B&A as an operating railroad was officially done.

Key words I was looking for in the official statement: "Holdings will also close 142 unprofitable stores near the end of the year. Liquidation sales at these stores are expected to begin shortly. This is in addition to the previously announced closure of 46 unprofitable stores that is expected to be completed by November 2018." In other words... not 'lights out, doors locked as of Monday morning' situation like some reports had suggested with the word "immediate."

The full press release is available on the SHC website. More to come, of course. I'll edit this description again tomorrow afternoon.

EDIT: I suppose there's not much to add at this point, besides the list of closures has been released - see the link in the comments below. Locally, Sears is closing its location at Wolfchase Galleria in Cordova (Memphis). The Southland Mall location will remain open, as will the Sears in Tupelo, MS (which is where the above picture was taken, btw. I didn't do a stour here however, and moreover do not intend to do so.)

Elsewhere, I'm a bit surprised that some locations *aren't* closing, such as the aforementioned Tupelo Sears (and/or the Meridian Sears), or the Gulfport Kmart, since those are the only three SHC stores left in the entire state of Mississippi. On the plus side, I guess that means that those stores must be profitable, considering the 142 announced closing locations are unprofitable or only marginally profitable. And to be sure, the company is indeed exiting some other states with this round, which of course is entirely expected.

I am personally curious to know if the fact that some stores are leased back from Seritage played any role in the selection of closing stores; 33 Seritage stores are on the closing list (including Wolfchase) out of what I believe are 70-something total. (The exact number can be found on Seritage's website, in the letter from their CEO posted in response to SHC's bankruptcy.)

The sales are expected to continue into December (although I'm not sure whether or not they will run through the holidays themselves), with the stores closing before the end of the year. The ongoing round of August-announced closures, meanwhile, do not appear to be affected by the filing; a call to one of those stores this morning netted a response that they will be closing a few days after Thanksgiving, as planned.

Local media have finally put up articles pertaining to the Wolfchase store's closure... and the MBJ (if not others as well; I haven't checked) erroneously states that two other Sears stores remain in Memphis. That's wrong: one is a Hometown store. Those aren't owned by SHC. They are separate. That shouldn't be that hard for reporters to figure out.

The article also calls Eddie Lampert the former CEO of the company, which - as of the filing - is correct, since he has indeed stepped down as CEO... but also somewhat misleading, because it doesn't mention that he will remain in the capacity of chairman (effectively making it sound like he's leaving the company altogether, which is very far from the truth, as we all know). Come on, guys.

LDV was the British van manufacturer formed after the bankruptcy of Leyland DAF in 1997. Orginally it was the commercial car division of Leyland. The Maxus was introduced in 2004. After the bankruptcy of LDV SAIC from China bought the assets of the company. In 2011 the van was relaunched as Maxus V80.

Built in 1935–1936 at a cost of $318,000, the U.S. Court-house features an understated combination of the Beaux Arts and Neoclassical styles. It was designed by Eric Kebbon, who also designed the 1937 C.F. Haynsworth Federal Building in Greenville, South Carolina. With funds limited during the Great Depression, the courthouse lacks the exuberant detailing typical of many Beaux Arts buildings. The Beaux Arts style is known for its classically inspired details, variety of stone finishes, and projecting pavilions with colossal columns and pedimented entablature on top. Characteristics of the Neoclassical style include symmetry, smooth stone surfaces, and colonnades.

The courthouse has a granite foundation, and the walls consist of limestone blocks. The overall massing and exterior design on all four elevations is simple, symmetrical, and classically inspired. The round-arched windows feature limestone keystones on the first story, while the second-story windows have heavy limestone frames culminating in keystones. Limestone belt courses extend along the first story and between the first and second stories. A cornice with an unadorned frieze and dentil molding runs below the roof's edge. Topping the hipped roof is a circular limestone cupola with Tuscan columns and copper roof with a brass finial.

The principal embellishment is a central temple-front pavilion on the south facade, highlighted by a coursed limestone base pierced with arches and an upper-level portico with an arcade. On the first story, the central arch frames the double door entry. The second story includes Tuscan columns and a limestone balustrade. Above the columns, the pediment features a simple frieze with dentil-block molding and an oculus (round) window with limestone surround.

The former postal lobby and main staircase are located at the south (main) entry. Original finishes include marble flooring and wainscoting, marble pilasters along the south wall, decorative crown molding, bronze ornaments and grills, and marble surrounds with keystones accenting the south wall's doors and windows. Marble writing tables and a bulletin board with marble surround are at the lobby's south wall. Below the north wall's crown molding are Ulreich's murals, depicting important events in Florida's history. The west and north walls have original brass six-panel doors with classically detailed surrounds. The lobby's original brass light fixtures with glass globes are typical of 1930s post offices. Faced with marble, the original curved staircase is at the lobby's southwest corner. Following the stairs' curve, the staircase railing has iron balusters with a wood cap and decorative bronze newels at each level.

The two-story main courtroom is on the second floor. The courtroom lobby retains historic terrazzo floors, marble baseboards, wooden chair rails, and paneled doors. The courtroom itself features wood wainscoting and fluted Ionic pilasters supporting a massive wood entablature with a dentil cornice, all of painted white pine. Arched windows on the south wall have wood trim with a keystone and rosette corner blocks. Original furnishings include the judge's bench, jury box, court rail, and spectators' benches.

In 2000, an annex was completed near the historic building to provide space for the U.S. District Court. In 2003–2004, the courthouse was subject to a $4 million renovation that included window and facade restoration, preservation of key areas such as judges' office suites, and remodeling of remaining areas for bankruptcy court, clerk, and trustee and U.S. Marshals use. Akin & Associates Architects, Inc. provided architectural design services, while Peter R. Brown Construction, Inc. was the general contractor. In 2005, the Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation recognized the project with an outstanding achievement award.
