Totally impromptu shoot - no planning.
ambient light provided by flourescents, underexposed to -2, white balance set for flash to make the flourescents yellow come out, speedlite 430ex behind the subjects on full power (little less might've worked better i think)
I guess I should use this as some promotion for the guys. find their music here:

Friends of mine asked me to shoot them for their band pics, appropriately, the band name is Spark Notes, so I had to use sparklers, on the shore of Sarasota Bay with the city in the background, with a roman candle for some bling....
This creative shoot took some careful consideration, especially as it involved photographing people using long exposures in almost complete darkness. Conditions were not ideal and due to freezing temperatures, we only made one attempt at shooting this. Nevertheless the results were pleasing. The final image comprises of four separate shots layered in Photoshop with surprisingly very little editing. Thanks for looking – Mk.
An outake from a bandshoot I´m working on this week. Final images will be in color but I like b/w so I had to do one.

During this shoot, I worked relatively blind until I was able to piece together each shot using editing software on my home computer. This composite portrait image comprises of four separate exposures, which were stacked in Photoshop. The key to success was for Rockafella band members to remain static throughout the entire shoot so minimal editing and image manipulation was required. Fortunately, it all worked perfectly and I didn’t have to recall the band for a reshoot. I love it when a plan comes together! Thanks for looking - Mk
Just completed this fantastic shoot for the band Storm the Palace. Check their awesome music out on soundcloud.com/stormthepalace
This was a big step up for me in terms of lighting and was pleased how it came out and really enjoyed working with everyone.
Additional thanks goes to Gemma Kate Vanson for styling and being my right hand person.
Lighting info:
In terms of lighting this was set up using two flashes. The first one was on camera right using a 60 inch umbrella. Below the umbrella were 2 black polystyrene boards used to block some dappled sunlight.
The second flash was gelled with a 1/2 CTO to match the colour of the light coming through the windows. It was in-between the two doors and used to light the 2 guys at the back. This was pointed upwards and bounced into 2 white polystyrene boards which were both angled so that that light would reach each person. This was necessary as there was a doorway in between and I couldn't get light to both people by bouncing off the ceiling.
Both flashes were activated using triggers.
Strobist info:

Shots from a band shoot in a secret Cornish location. I like to think of Nervosa as psychedelic prog folk rock. I won't take photos of any other genre, so don't even ask (well do ask, I'll probably change my rules).
Flickrati member The Ginger Pixie and her silver "banjo" (alright it's a mandolin) is the leader of these souls.
Light: Two small Portalite softboxes through a transparent panel (from Calumet) above subjects (2x BXRi 250ws). Strip boxes left and right rear powered by an Elinchrom Ranger RX. Spot on the backdrop. 150cm deep octa behind me for fill (Elinchrom ELC1000). Triggered with Skyports.
