I expect that many of you will remember Gandalf uttering this phrase in the first Lord of the Rings film as he fights off the Balrog. Also suitable would be 'None shall pass!' spoken by the Black Knight in the Monty Python Holy Grail film. Those horns on the coo look like they could inflict more than a mere flesh wound!

Last week I was rummaging in parts of my study that haven’t been delved since the Balrog was wakened. I discovered a folder which contained some flowers that I pressed quite a few years ago.
Flower pressing is something of a lost art these days which I think is a shame. Not only are they pretty in their own right but they give a unique perspective on the structure and delicate forms of plants and flowers.
Several of the pressings were of foxgloves, and I thought they were really quite interesting to look at.
One of the things I like about foxgloves is the pattern of spots on the inside throat of the flower which are there to guide flying insects to the nectar. The pressed flowers revealed the whole patterns of the individual flowers. You can’t normally see these without dissecting the plant.
The patterns are very variable, and the arrangements are curious. I like the way the splotches get smaller nearer the nectar.
The Macro Mondays theme this week was on patterns in nature. It’s a theme made in heaven (almost literally :) ) because there are so many interesting things you could take. I thought though it would be a good opportunity to share an image of one of my pressed foxglove flowers. I thought it would be a bit different…
The dried flower is two inches long. Yey!

[Tripod mount, delayed shutter, single image. Backlit using my cheap and cheerful LED lightbox (second time it’s been out this week :) ).
Quickly developed in Lightroom for colour and exposure with noise reduction but no sharpening.
In Affinity used Levels to make the backlit pure white, and used Curves in LAB mode to get the exposure more even and to emphasise the colours a little using steepened ramps for the colour channels. Sharpened with Unsharp Mask and that was it.]
Will probably get around to taking better pictures later... He took a faceplant off my table after this one was captured and I havn't had time to rebuild yet! Anywasy if you wanna see this get built you can check it out on my youtube mitchbuilds

To be honest, when I heard about this theme, I had a feeling my photo would be one of my weakest this entire cycle. Where to find a castle-like setting I was completely clueless about, and I thought that using real fire would somehow ruin the lighting on the picture. However, little did I know that those ten big cement blocks in my yard piled up would make a perfect castle wall...and I was wrong about the lighting altogether!
Creating this was good fun, and my picture turned out way better than I expected. Couldn't be happier :D
Story: Entity is running for her life in a castle as a dragon (Balrog) chases her. He is blowing out fire everywhere and blocked the stairway, but Entity spots a narrow passage way to escape through and makes a run for it...eventually leading the dragon into a trap.
(*Note: The red Entity is wearing symbolizes danger).

Weird shaped room meant no straight on photos, so this'll have to do.
And so Tuor beheld a vision of Gondolin, once so beautiful and fair, now broken and covered in red hot flames and thick black smoke.

They told me not to build all of Gondolin, so I had to scale down and just do the King's Square, with the images of the two trees upon King Turgon's Tower, which fell and caused his own death.
Ecthelion also, of the Fountain, faces Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, with the spike upon his helmet. From the battle, Tuor the messenger of Ulmo, with his young child Eärendil, the hope of Elves and Men, just barely escapes. But that is for another time.
I’ve wanted to do a minifigure battle for so long. I felt like finally I had enough figs! I figured out I was wrong, but still, I did put a lot of figures into this… and that consumed more time than you would expect! And finally, this is the second full castle that I've ever made. Yes, it's the first full minifigure scale castle or keep that I've ever made! It was an immense endeavour, especially for just a couple weeks.
This is my entry to the Finale of MELO, which I am honoured to be able to compete in! I attempted to recreate each scene from a different book throughout the competition, thus this one is meant to be derived from the recent book, The Fall of Gondolin. I tried my best to make this version of the Palace of Gondolin resemble fair Tirion Upon Tuna, from the Undying Lands, as well as to capture the horrible moment of it's fearful betrayal and fall, while the last of the Greatest Noldor fought bravely and desperately to the last. I hope you like it! To God be all the Glory!

Here's my second build to the final round of IF 2023. I used a mix of practical lighting and editing on the balrog, and I think the effect worked pretty well! The seed part was the leaf piece in any color. I used it here 15 times, in orange, pearl gold, and yellow.

My entry for the MELO and the 12x12 category for the Summer Joust.
It's the scene Gandalf is fighting the balrog midair in Khazad-dûm.
The partly made Balrog is inspired by Jonas Kramm's Balrog.
My entry to "Explore the Middle-earth" challenge on LEGO Ideas. Wanted to take part in that challenge and since really like making monsters and creatures, decided to build famous Khazad-dum scene with Gandalf stopping Balrog.
Used official LEGO piece from Ninjago fire dragon to make my Balrog stand out, think that orange flames of wings work really nicely with black body.
Additional details we know from the movie were the final touch - skeletons and skulls of fallen dwarves, tools and mining equipment or even some mithril crystals may be found in the build.

Here's a shirt I did design for my mates over at Shelflife. Im pleased as punch with the quality of the prints and apparently these have been selling before they hit the shelves :D
The Lieutenant of Morgoth, a most powerful Maiar, the greatest Balrog to have ever roamed Middle-earth, Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, was a terrible foe. He slew three famous elves, and took part in many of the most pivotal battles of the First Age of Arda.
This was a very difficult construction. I didn't actually know how difficult it was until he fell from the top of my Tower of Gondolin and I had to try to rebuild him. Some things may have changed, but for the most part he is as I intended him to be.
I am very happy with the colour choices, as I wanted something to set him apart. Not only does he have a variety of colours throughout, but the flames also are a mixture of carefully chosen shades and colours, with four different shades of transparent orange in the whip.
I am also pleased with the details of the face. He looks good from a variety of angles, and is even poseable, although quite delicate.

In Fangorn the Hobbits meet someone they did not expect, the ent Treebeard.
A great power has been sleeping here for many long years and the coming of Merry and Pippin will be like the falling of small stones that starts an avalanche in the mountains.
After the Balrog, Treebeard is the next big figure I could build for my LotR series. The roots and branches made him an interesting challenge that I really enjoyed! Some unusual part usage are the parrot nose and the sausages for fingers.

My third entry into the Colossal Castle Contest XIII for the Miscellaneous Large category.
This build is somewhat of a remake of my earlier Bridge of Khazad Dum build from a few years ago. With this build I set out to create the most accurate minifigure scale balrog possible. While the exact correct scale is very relative, as the balrogs varied in shape and height throughout Tolkien's literature. This was a big challenge in muscular shaping and proportion, but I am satisfied with this attempts result.
Impromptu night out light painting with my pal from work Rich Knowles. I was keen to try out net curtaining to create fire effects whilst light painting and I actually bagged a different shot to this that was okay for a first attempt, however I preferred this shot due to the other lighting effects even though the net curtaining (and the silhouette) in this one are pants!
You shall not pass! Gandalf’s fight with the Balrog.
On the Bridge of Khazad-dûm Gandalf faces the Balrog of Morgoth and brings it to fall. While falling into the abyss the Balrog’s whip snares Gandalf’s leg, and he too plummets into the depths of the mine.
I had huge respect for probably the most iconic scene from The Lord of the Rings, but am really happy how the Balrog and the Moria architecture turned out! The Balrog actually has a light-brick inside to make the fire on its back blaze up.

Probably not nearly minifig scale, but I still had my fun.
He has a Lego light brick in his body that illuminates his fiery back.

This is the getting toward the end of Weano Gorge just past the handrail pool. A short swim gets you to this point followed by a longer swim to the drop off into the red gorge. I didn't climb down the first waterfall into the restricted area but during our trip we had heard that in the past, this was not an uncommon thing for the intrepid hiker to do!

Equipped with two heavy acid plasma throwers, BALROGs are low flying war machines with limited space capability. They are very efficient against infantry and vehicles depending on their armor as the glowing pink plasma they shoot burn through flesh and metal.
2nd VV. a third one is ready and awaiting. ;)

Balrog to Nipon aka Japan
My own Balrog diorama. It's about 1300 pieces (with base), 40 cm tall and it has custom wings, movable head, arms and legs. I managed to solve the lighting with the upper pose of the head and don't need to push any buttons to turn on or off the lights. Fire lighting is given by four LEGO LED lamps built in the base. This is the resoult, edited with photoshop. I hope you'll enjoy.
In my final LotR scene Théoden and his people reach the Hornburg to find refuge from Saruman's attack. Never before got the walls of Helm's Deep defeated!
The end has come to my journey. In these 26 vignettes I put all my love for The Lord of the Rings and all my love for LEGO, making it the biggest project I ever worked on. It's been a challenge, but also an amazing experience! Thanks to everyone who was part of it by commenting and leaving a like!
I'm particularly grateful to Xenomurphy who started this collaboration and invited me to join. I will now lay the rest of The Two Towers in the capable hands of Marcel. Follow him for the epic second half!
