This was a phenomenon that I had not seen before! This morning around our house I noticed balls of snow rolling and blowing across our yard, and some were about 25cm (10in), wow! So later in the day I went over to the lake to get a few shots of them. I have since learned that ‘Snowballs falling from the sky are called graupel, which is a type of frozen precipitation that forms when snowflakes collect supercooled water droplets”.

C'était un phénomène que je n'avais jamais vu auparavant ! Ce matin, autour de notre maison, j'ai remarqué des boules de neige qui roulaient et soufflaient dans notre cour, et certaines mesuraient environ 25 cm (10 pouces), wow ! Plus tard dans la journée, je suis donc allée au lac pour en prendre quelques photos. J'ai depuis appris que « les boules de neige qui tombent du ciel sont appelées graupel, qui est un type de précipitation gelée qui se forme lorsque les flocons de neige recueillent des gouttelettes d'eau surfondues ».

The facade of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao last Autumn. I thought that the black and white conversion enhanced the textures of the panelling on this immense architectural structure.
The decorations in Giro Park in Penticton are quite unique this year with these 3 dimensional lit balls hanging from trees int he park. Quite impressive when you first come across them because you don't actually see the trees until your eyes get used to lighting. Branches of the tree are dusted with a coats of snow from the afternoon's snow fall.

"Often, strange structures appear on an oak tree and these attractive round balls seen swinging amongst the catkins or attached to the buds are known as Galls and house different types of wasp larva."
There are various types of gall and they are caused by a gall wasp that lays its eggs inside the acorn, causing it to mutate. These wasps do not usually cause damage to the tree and are nothing to worry about. The most common are the Currant galls, the red Cherry galls and the Marble galls. If you were to cut one of those galls open, you would find the wasp larva curled up inside.
