In most parts of the world snakes are feared, but in Benin they are revered. Royal pythons are worshiped in Benin, especially in Ouidah. The good news is that royal pythons are not dangerous, but the bad news is that these sacred reptiles are welcome Beninese households where they are fed when the doors of the temple are opened at night. There is no fear when the locals welcome these slithering pythons into their living rooms like an honoured guest.

Almost gone...
And yes, for the humorless I'm aware that that's a mouse tail sticking out of the snake's mouth and not a tongue.
The feeder mouse was F/T. No live mouse feeding here.
Considering this was the third mouse in his meal and he missed the strike three times, that's probably a very good thing.
This is me and my pet Ball Python, "Puff". Shes an adult female and very tame. Taken at a local photography school studio.

Needless to say, an all time favorite!
She's handling posing, smiling, and directing this giant snake all at once! Meanwhile, look at that smile!

waiting for his enclosure to be cleaned. He's a Royal (ball) python (Python regius). Photo by Frank.
says "hello!" He's a Royal (ball) python (Python regius). They are called ball pythons because when threatened they roll into a ball hiding and protecting their heads. "Richard" hatched August 8, 1997. He hatched with a severely deformed spine but he has done well over the years. Royal pythons are among the smaller pythons rarely exceeding 4 - 5 feet in length and are native to west Africa. Photo by Frank
unfortunately I got a bit of glare from the glass in this shot. Lucille, my ball python, with her favorite meal.
ps...the rat was previously frozen, no animals were harmed in the making of this shot (just put to good use).
